Surnames as Christian names

What do people think of this.
Baby due in November. middle name agreed on ages ago its dps surname but is also often used as a Christian name (think similar to Martin or Graham).
First name was down to a shortlist but dp has thrown in a curveball name. It's one have only ever heard as a surname. Hated it at first but it's really growing on me. Will share but wanted to know views on using surnames in this way first.

My DH's first and last names could both work as either first or last names, and also start with the same letter. People get them mixed up daily. He's good natured about it but I imagine it must get wearing.

blueskyinmarch · 19/07/2016 09:27

If we had had a son he would have had a first name, two middle names and a surname which could all be first names or surnames. We are Scottish though and Scottish names are often used this way.

CourtJester · 19/07/2016 14:35

At school i knew an Oliver Vincent, when the register was called out by a new teacher Vincent was always mistakenly called out as his first name. It used to infuriate him!

yaaasqueen · 19/07/2016 16:16

I think it's fab if it works well as a name go for it.

My brother is called Oakley it's my grandma's maiden surname

My cousins are Strachan and Cooper - their mums maiden name and her mum's maiden name. They live in America though. Anything American is considered a bit shit on here 😂

possum18 · 19/07/2016 16:26

My eldest twins name is my maiden name - Lewis Smile

RiverTam · 19/07/2016 16:34

I don't mind surname-first names, obviously it depends on the name. MN is really snobbish about them though, too American.

DarkBlueEyes · 19/07/2016 16:39

I love them and don't think they are tacky at all (well I suppose it depends!) I have friends who have: Morgan, Scott, Logan, Parker, Finlay, McKenzie. Not so mad on Harrison, Jensen or Jackson, but that's personal taste.

If you love it, then go for it!

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/07/2016 19:19

3 of my 4 DC have surnames as names, all of them very American sounding (think Parker, Harrison, Anderson, etc) however their surname is not something you would use as a Christian name even an uncommon one. I can imagine it being annoying but not enough to not chose the name :)

It's all personal preference some people despise my kid's names and some think they're lovely but i don't mind either way!

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/07/2016 19:22

Oh and DC4's middle name (the only one without a surname first name lol) is actually most definitely a surname and everyone thinks it's his surname or a double-barrelled surname. Think like his name would be Jacob Smith Jones but Smith is his middle name and everyone actually thinks it's "Smith-Jones". Nothing but a slight inconvenience to be honest, my first name was more bother through school than any of theirs Blush

raviolidreaming · 19/07/2016 19:28

Curious to know what you will do if you get married. Will the child then be Harrison Paul Paul?

Presumably OP's partner has taken / plans to take her surname.

Timesrchanging · 19/07/2016 22:19

Thank you all for your views. Just to clarify ds will get my surname which could never be mistaken for a Christian name. It's long (11 letters) so dp and I didn't want to hyphenate thats why dps surname as the middle name.
It's been mentioned quite a few times in the replies so obviously isn't that odd! Middle name will be jackson.
The Christian name dp has suggested however has not been mentioned.
It's Lestrade.
So thoughts please -is it to wierd?. The more I say it it in my head it's growing on me - lestrade jackson surname. but don't want to set ds to be up for a lifetime of ridicule etc.

Makes me think of interview with a vampire.

RiverTam · 19/07/2016 22:27

Think you might be mixing it up with Lestat, blue.

Lestrade? As in Inspector, from Sherlock Holmes? I really really wouldn't, it's far to associated with Inspector Lestrade.

thebakerwithboobs · 19/07/2016 23:03

It will be shortened. Can you cope with little baby Les?

Dizzydodo · 20/07/2016 05:57

I've never come across that as a first name, it makes me think of the Sherlock Holmes character, not a fan sorry.

Mclaren37 · 20/07/2016 06:08

Another person of Scottish descent here - and our son has my mum's maiden name as his first name. He and his siblings were born in the US. Very normal/traditional in both these countries. (Seems to drive English people crazy though, especially on MN!)
I'm not sure how I should pronounce Lestrade mind you?

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 20/07/2016 09:10

I quite like it! It is very surnamey though. I've certainly not heard of it as a Christian / first name. Do you like it op?

Strokethefurrywall · 20/07/2016 19:26

Hah, I love these threads - both my son's names have been vilified on this thread. I'm not fussed, both names suit them.

DH is Scottish and has a Scottish surname as a first name so it's not weird for us. Plus we don't live in the UK (nor do we live in mumsnet land) where surnames for first names are frowned upon for being "American".

That being said, DS2 has an Irish surname as a first name (mentioned above) which is pretty unusual as a first name (not Finley or Riley or similar) - not sure how it can become tacky or will date if it's not particularly popular!

NotYoda · 20/07/2016 19:28

Lestrade is a bit silly, IMO.

Bluesand1 · 20/07/2016 20:03

Okay I can kind of see why some users of mumsnet might not be too fond of surnames as first names although I think in real life most people don't even think about this and it's completely normal in other countries but what's the worry about picking a name that will date. Most names apart from a few are dated! Why is that a problem...

Bluesand1 · 20/07/2016 20:04

Or will become dated...

crayfish · 20/07/2016 20:08

I have an obvious surname for a middle name and so does my niece and my son, all fine.

Some surnames as first names are ok, I'm not keen on most though.

Lestrade on the other hand? Please don't. That's a terrible name, sorry!

Tiggeryoubastard · 20/07/2016 23:59

You were told on your other thread it's fucking hideous. This can't be real.

cosmicglittergirl · 21/07/2016 07:45

I rarely come on to say I don't like a name, but Lestrade is a bit too much. And yes, he'll be Les. Like Les Dawson or Les Battersby.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 21/07/2016 07:52

Surely he would be "less" rather than Les. It's not Lez-trad is it, it's Less-trad I think? Less is quite nice as a nn. I know a Liss (nn for Melissa).
