Douglas?

DP has always wanted a DS called this, it's an important family name for him.

I've spent fifteen years joking swearing that I'd never have a son called Douglas.

But now we are having a DS, I'm almost changing my mind...

Good or bad? I used to think it was awful but maybe not so much. I think my biggest concern was always that "Doug" might be great for a cool, rugby playing 16 year old but not so good on a slightly less confident boy, say. But then there are so many different names used nowadays, maybe that doesn't matter anymore?

Not keen, sorry.

GoldPlatedBacon · 11/07/2016 19:56

Douglas is one of my favourite boys name. It's a definite contender for any future son. I love Dougie

Thurlow · 11/07/2016 20:33

One minute I think it's ok (and a lovely tribute to DP's family) - and then the next it's in the Trevor category...

I love Douglas.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/07/2016 20:36

You could pick a more contemporary middle name.

NotYoda · 11/07/2016 20:40

I like it

I think middle-aged names like this are due a come back

Philip
Gregory
Ray

All good names, IMO

winkywinkola · 11/07/2016 20:41

I love the name Douglas.

NotYoda · 11/07/2016 20:43

It's not like Trevor. It's strong

Think about:

Kirk Douglas
Douglas Bader
Douglas Booth
Douglas (Dougie) Henshall
Douglas Adams

smartyclogs · 11/07/2016 20:45

Don't choose it!
If one minute you think it's only ok... "Ok" is not good enough. Don't you have to love the name too?

It would be 'ok' as a middle name. at a push

OSETmum · 11/07/2016 20:48

I don't like Doug but I loooove Dougie!

Thurlow · 11/07/2016 20:53

We're struggling to agree and only have names we either both don't mind, or one thinks is ok and the other loves. So in which case I think, why not have a name at least one of us loves? And in which case, why not try and get on board with the family name DP is so desperate to pass on?

Ps - the middle name might well be Philip Grin

Very popular here in Scotland, but Dougie is pronounced Doogie which is horrible.

crayfish · 11/07/2016 20:56

I quite like it! But then I also have a fondness for Duncan so my taste might not be everybody else's. I like Dougie for a baby too. I'm in Scotland and it's relatively popular in the over 40 crowd but rare for a baby.

BadToTheBone · 11/07/2016 21:18

Dougie is a really cool name, I love it.

I just asked 14yr old ds what he though of Douglas his reaction was "Confused.....Grin DugieeeeGrin Dougie is a cool name..... Douglas is a bit weird but he'd probably be known as Dougie anyway, and he would be one of the cool kids"

I wouldn't worry about names not sounding like a babies name, he will be an adult far longer than he will be a baby!

Thurlow · 14/07/2016 18:10

When I picture "Doug" I do not picture a small grinning thing in a babygrow Grin

But you're right, of course it's a name for life.

I'm this close to giving in to DP.

Though I may tease him by saying he can have his beloved Douglas - if this baby has my surname

(I'm not actually bothered by the surname at all, I just think it would be hilarious to watch his face when I suggested this!)

It's a 'no' from me.

Douglas is on a par with Gordon, Roger and Nigel. Not great.

Thurlow · 14/07/2016 18:21

I was chatting vaguely about this with a friend today. We were wondering if names were less adventurous when we were kids 30 years ago so all the boys were Dan/Michael/David/Andrew - but now it's different and pretty much anything goes.

I asked my 14yo ds what he thought of the name Douglas and he said its "Sound"
I think that's a good thing!

Thurlow · 14/07/2016 18:35

The teens approve!

I'm in Scotland and know several Dougs/Dougies/Douglases of all ages. It's just an ordinary name to me. Neither hipster nor not old fashioned.
