DP has always wanted a DS called this, it's an important family name for him.

I've spent fifteen years joking swearing that I'd never have a son called Douglas.

But now we are having a DS, I'm almost changing my mind...

Good or bad? I used to think it was awful but maybe not so much. I think my biggest concern was always that "Doug" might be great for a cool, rugby playing 16 year old but not so good on a slightly less confident boy, say. But then there are so many different names used nowadays, maybe that doesn't matter anymore?

Douglas is one of my favourite boys name. It's a definite contender for any future son. I love Dougie

One minute I think it's ok (and a lovely tribute to DP's family) - and then the next it's in the Trevor category...

Don't choose it!
If one minute you think it's only ok... "Ok" is not good enough. Don't you have to love the name too?

It would be 'ok' as a middle name. at a push

We're struggling to agree and only have names we either both don't mind, or one thinks is ok and the other loves. So in which case I think, why not have a name at least one of us loves? And in which case, why not try and get on board with the family name DP is so desperate to pass on?

Ps - the middle name might well be Philip Grin

Very popular here in Scotland, but Dougie is pronounced Doogie which is horrible.

I quite like it! But then I also have a fondness for Duncan so my taste might not be everybody else's. I like Dougie for a baby too. I'm in Scotland and it's relatively popular in the over 40 crowd but rare for a baby.

I just asked 14yr old ds what he though of Douglas his reaction was "Confused.....Grin DugieeeeGrin Dougie is a cool name..... Douglas is a bit weird but he'd probably be known as Dougie anyway, and he would be one of the cool kids"

I wouldn't worry about names not sounding like a babies name, he will be an adult far longer than he will be a baby!

When I picture "Doug" I do not picture a small grinning thing in a babygrow Grin

But you're right, of course it's a name for life.

I'm this close to giving in to DP.

Though I may tease him by saying he can have his beloved Douglas - if this baby has my surname

(I'm not actually bothered by the surname at all, I just think it would be hilarious to watch his face when I suggested this!)

It's a 'no' from me.

Douglas is on a par with Gordon, Roger and Nigel. Not great.

I was chatting vaguely about this with a friend today. We were wondering if names were less adventurous when we were kids 30 years ago so all the boys were Dan/Michael/David/Andrew - but now it's different and pretty much anything goes.

I asked my 14yo ds what he thought of the name Douglas and he said its "Sound"
I think that's a good thing!

I'm in Scotland and know several Dougs/Dougies/Douglases of all ages. It's just an ordinary name to me. Neither hipster nor not old fashioned.
