Erwin/Erwyn/Irwin

Regardless of spelling, what do you think of the name?

Perfectly respectable, no complaints here. Personally I'd go with irwin but only because I've never seen an Erwin or Erwyn.

It reminds me of the turtle from Raising Helen, and the little "reject" kid from The Addams Family Values movie. They are the only two Irwins I've ever heard of. Oh, aside from Steve Irwin!

It's actually quite a nice name... not one you hear often/ever, really. I think the right little boy could pull it off well. It sounds horrible in my accent, but it probably sounds better in others (as most things do!)

Oh, and like the first poster, I'd spell it Irwin as it's the only way I've known it to be spelt.

Id go Erwyn, for the same reasons as above. It's lovely!

I prefer Edwin. I'm not sure about the "Er" sound.

That is unfortunate as were planning the middle name "Fox" but perhaps not...

Yup, Erwin Rommel.
Although his popular reputation is more as a German than a Nazi IYSWIM, so it's not like calling your kid Adolf or something.

Fon't they all get pronouced sort of like "owen". I used to think it was "er-win" but then heard someone say they surname "owen".

Erwin, pronounced "Airveen" is quite an old fashioned name here in Germany although I don't think it has any particularly negative connotations re Rommel. I quite like it in any spelling. I like Edwin too.

Erwin, as in Schrodinger (don't even think of Rommel) is an excellent name so excellent, one of my cats has it

Erwin is my preferred spelling. Makes it look less like a surname which in my mind is what Irwin is.

I think it's lovely no matter how it's spelled. Irwin or Erwyn would be my preferences. Maybe go for the latter so as not to confuse with surname/bread.

Erwyn would be pronounced Err-win rather than Urr-win.

Erwyn isn't that common, but there are lots of names that sound similar that are, eg Gerwyn and Berwyn.

I have an irrational dislike of Erwin / Irwin (never heard of Erwyn). I don't really know why but it just makes my skin crawl! I feel the same about Edwin and a few other 'E' names. I think it's just that the very few men I've met with those names have been a little bit creepy. Sorry - I'm sure there are loads of lovely men with those names and I'm sure if I met one I'd change my mind about the names. It's just strange coincidence.
