Which name do you like? I don't like names that are too popular

Petrova is nice with nickname petra if you had to...
Francesca is nice with nick name frankie if you had to...

PiSeas · 11/06/2016 19:29

Frankie but only if it's from Francesca or Francis. Personally I don't like Petra, even though it's a girl name it jusy feels harsh. Like a headmistress.

Sophronia · 11/06/2016 22:31

Frankie if it's short for Frances. Otherwise Petra.

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/06/2016 22:49

Well I like them both!

I like the ice maiden quality of Petra and I like the friendliness of Frankie.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 11/06/2016 22:51

They're so different to each other! Petra I think of as classic and Frankie as cool. I love both!

Kidnapped · 11/06/2016 22:55

Hmmm, they both kind of say "We wanted a boy" to me.

That could just be me though.

EllenDegenerate · 11/06/2016 23:56

Petra

Raines100 · 12/06/2016 06:41

Not a fan of Frankie tbh, but Petra is fab. I know one who is stunning and went to Oxford. Bonnie and Mabel are the only Blue Peter dogs I know!

septembersunshine · 12/06/2016 10:19

Not a fan of either.

Petrified - this word reminds me of Petra. And Frankie is really manish for a girl/woman. As a nickname that she can discard if she wants to it's fine. But what can she really do with it if this is her only name? Frank for short?

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 12/06/2016 10:22

What would Frankie be short for, OP?

McCunty · 12/06/2016 10:25

Neither, Sorry.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/06/2016 10:28

I likie them both!

BoredHouseWifee · 12/06/2016 10:34

Frankie. Petra is the name of the people who run the flats I live in

SabineUndine · 12/06/2016 19:08

Frankie only if it's short for Frances or Francesca. Petra is lovely, or you might want to consider Petronella.

cecilelliott · 12/06/2016 20:22

Also a vote for Petra. Considered it myself for DD.

CaoNiMao · 13/06/2016 07:01

Petra!

Frankie is try-hard. It's the name given to annoyingly "plucky" female characters in shitty tv shows.

Dontrocktheboat · 13/06/2016 07:20

I Sam surprised at the negative reactions as I really like both! If Frankie I would give a full name though and use Frankie as a nickname. I knew a very pretty Petra at school so possibly that has influenced me but I think it is pretty and unusual.

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 13/06/2016 07:28

I used to love the name Petra after meeting one at uni - she was named after the city rather than the feminine form of Peter and was a lovely person whose name seemed unusual without being silly and flowery or "made up"...

However when I moved to Germany I discovered it is The mum name - every second woman in her late 30s or early to mid 40s is called Petra. It is the Sarah or Claire equivalent :o

albertcampionscat · 13/06/2016 07:36

Definitely Petra - unusual and beautiful.

There's a poem about Petra the city that ends with 'a rose-red city half as old as time' www.poetryatlas.com/poetry/poem/3771/petra.html

Not that keen on Frankie - but Frances or Francesca are both good.

austenozzy · 13/06/2016 07:44

I've known a couple of dogs called Petra, plus Bernie ecclestones delightful daughter. Any girls called Frankie sound like they are likely to be trouble!

Navy if a name is try hard I'd take that as meaning the namer has second guessed themselves and thought too much about what other people will think (perhaps what other people will think of the parents rather than what impression the name will create of the person who carries it) rather than just going with a name they love.

I can't see that it really applies to these names though - more to something like Pixie or Maverick or something that makes an incredibly obscure classical or musical reference perhaps...

Frankie makes me think of sinks.

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 13/06/2016 09:49

That's Franke (the family/ surname) isn't it Three - not Frankie Confused

Frankie is a nickname for Frances or Francesca though as others have said - bit limiting as a full name especially as the ie makes it a much more casual or cutsie nickname than things like Tom / Ben / Alex (struggling to think of a girl's name in the category... thinking of things like Bella which could be nicknames for Annabelle or Arabella or Isobel but Bella is a name from a different root isn't it....? Lena is a common name where we live and is originally a shortening of Magdalena I think, maybe that counts... ) which can be either abbreviated forms or fairly commonly names in their own right.

I'd go with a name that can be shortened to Frankie - there are a few long names that can... Although tbh if I hadn't ever had any connection to Germany and realised that it is the female equivalent of Dave here I'd still have loved the name Petra :o
