Nigerian Girl's Name

So I've posted a few times but we have a name we both like finally... Partner is Nigerian and we have agreed on... Kemi.

Thoughts?

I like it, there are names i like more but it's important we both agree and we don't have the same taste. My only worry is people keep going "Kenny?"

I know a Kemi (although it's short for something else). It's one of those names that she'll have to say and spell the first time but thereafter it's not difficult to grasp.

whattodo89 · 10/06/2016 17:33

That's what I thought Gold... After one or two introductions it should be fairly easy to get...

I have a Nigerian friend called Chika.

It's a lovely name but Kemi sounds nice too.

RiverTam · 10/06/2016 17:35

Lovely.

manicinsomniac · 10/06/2016 18:31

I think it's lovely and, compared to many of the Nigerian girls I know, quite easy for an English ear to 'get'.

Squashybanana · 10/06/2016 18:33

I like it. I know a couple of Nigerian girls called Tomi which is nice too.

EssentialHummus · 10/06/2016 18:33

I like it!

WhirlwindHugs · 10/06/2016 18:35

I think it's nice, good choice.

manicinsomniac · 10/06/2016 18:36

I know a Nigerian boy called Tomi. But it's short for something much longer.

ApocalypseSlough · 10/06/2016 18:36

Very nice. What about Temi? For Temitope?

RunLillian · 10/06/2016 20:22

Just Kemi, or Oluwakemi?

ScarletForYa · 10/06/2016 20:25

Lovely!

emsyj · 10/06/2016 20:26

Very pretty, and suits borh a little girl and an adult woman.

puddlejumpingqueen · 10/06/2016 20:28

I know an Israeli Kemi not relevant

I like it, will work for adult and child

timelytess · 10/06/2016 20:29

Perfect.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2016 20:59

Nice name, I like it.

Dontrocktheboat · 10/06/2016 21:06

It's OK. I have met two Yemis, which is similar and also nice.

AnneElliott · 10/06/2016 21:10

I like it. My friend at school was Oluwakemi but everyone called her Kemi and had no issues with it.

I had another friend called Titilayo and was called Layo for short. Also Myleita ( although I 've probably not spelt that right).

manicinsomniac · 11/06/2016 00:38

Just Kemi, or Oluwakemi?

Wouldn't Oluwakemi be a boy's name? As far as I know, Olu means 'son of'. Almost all the Nigerian boys I know have a name that begins with Olu but is shortened to something else (Oluwatoni to Toni, Oluwatimileheim to Timi, Oluwakorede to Korede etc) but none of the girls have that prefix.

I think Kemi is very pretty on its own.

No, 'Olu' and 'Oluwa' mean 'God' or 'my God' and can be used for either sex - Oluwaseyi, for example. There are several such prefixes which are really common in Yoruba names - eg 'Ade' meaning 'crown', 'Ola' meaning 'wealth' and 'Temi' meaning 'mine'.

IoraRua · 11/06/2016 15:10

It's a lovely name. Great sound and easy to spell.

manicinsomniac · 11/06/2016 16:40

Ah, ok, thanks for the correction RunLillian

Chewbecca · 11/06/2016 16:43

V nice

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 11/06/2016 16:44

I like it too.

Tummyrumbled · 11/06/2016 19:41

I know a doctor called Kemi (think it's a shortened version of Olukemi).
