Ellis - a sister for Freddie?

I love the name Ellis for DD (due in august) but not been met with much enthusiasm from family members.

Others we like are:

Blake
Frankie
Amelie

There are lots of others that I like that DH doesn't (my front runner was Rowan but he vetoed this amongst others)

please feel free to rank in order or preference and make suggestions, we always knew DS would always be a freddie so we're really struggling with this one!

I teach a class with two Ellises, one male and one female.

I'm afraid that they are universally referred to as Boy Ellis and Girl Ellis.

Elise?

IoraRua · 03/06/2016 21:55

I dislike Blake and Ellis for a girl, and Frankie...ok if it was a nickname, but I wouldn't want to be Frankie for the rest of my life.

Amelie is bland and overused tbh but is the best of the lot.

PickleSarnie · 03/06/2016 22:14

I love Frankie for a girl. And I know an awesome female Bobby. But their full names are Francesca and Roberta. I think it's nice to give them the choice tbh. Regardless of what you decide to call them every day. I would have hated a masculine sounding name what with being tall, clumsy and non dainty. It would have made me feel even less feminine.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 03/06/2016 22:54

I'm not kean on the name Ellis for either gender, but I'd say it's more feminine tgan masculine.
Blake is fab for a boy, but awful for a girl
Amelie. Sounds like you can't pronounce Emily, but the choice is obviously yours.
Other suggestions.
Elise
Elodie
Elsie
Eleri
Ellena
Lena
Lenna
Esme
Eliza
Emilia
Amelia
Amy
Emma
Emily
Alexia
Erica

Rory?

I work with a female Ellis. She is mid 20s. I like it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/06/2016 16:56

It took me about 2 whole seasons of Grey's Anatomy to realise that Ellis Grey was Ellis not Alice being pronounced oddly.

To me Ellis for a girl is a bit like John for a girl, odd.

Though for either sex, it would be better than Amelie which is just a bit dull.

Alex would work?

I love Ellis! I haven't heard it often enough to associate it with either sex...but I don't think it's problematic for a girl. I much prefer it to Frankie or Amelie.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 06/06/2016 08:24

So why is Alex just Alex ok for both a girl and a boy, but naming a girl Ellis is like naming a girl John? Confused

BertrandRussell · 06/06/2016 09:21

Because Alex is a unisex abbreviation for both a male and a female name. Ditto Bobby and Charlie.

"Can't get round Elise, Alice, Eilish, Ellie being considered super feminine but Ellis not! As I say though I know a few and it works well, sounds familiar without feeling overused."

That's like saying you can't get round John being masculine but Joan, Jane and June not..........

Ellis will be frequently mistaken for Alice. I am an Alice and you'd be surprised how often it works the other way round too.
