What do you think of the name Lachlan? Also, how would you pronounce it?

Noodle lots of baby name sites are rubbish at Scottish pronunciations.

PollyCoddle · 01/06/2016 14:26

Pronounced Lock-Lun. Or locky

To me it sounds very Australian as it's top ten here

LongChalk · 01/06/2016 14:33

Noodle, are you saying the Scots don't know how to pronounce a Scottish name? Hmm
Im not even Scottish and that annoys me. Baby name books are generally shit, full of names I've never heard of.

Radiatorvalves · 01/06/2016 14:37

My friend (Scottish) has a Lachlan. It is pronounced Lack-lan or Lacky (poor chap). Suits him!

LongChalk · 01/06/2016 14:37

Just realised its your thread, Noodle.

If you want to call him Lochlan, do so. He's your son after all. But if you want to call him by the Scottish name, Lachlan, then it's important to know that the correct pronunciation is with a soft 'a'.

Lack-lan

Noodle1234 · 01/06/2016 14:48

Longchalk, no, that's the opposite of what I'm saying lol. I'm wondering why the rest of the world has gotten the pronunciation wrong.

I have one Grin

We pronounce it "Loch Lun" but the Lun is more like the hon in honey not bun, if that makes sense!

Fab name!

heron98 · 01/06/2016 14:53

There's no "correct" pronunciation, just pronounce it as you would in your accent.

I am not so keen on it.

LongChalk · 01/06/2016 14:55

Oh, I see. I don't know. Maybe the 'o' sound is easier for non Scots. I'm English and I find it tricky to say. DH would probably find it easy. Maybe it's because the vowel should be followed by that lovely soft ch sound as in loch and when that doesn't come off the tongue easily then neither does Lachlan. As an Englishwoman, Lochlan is certainly easier to say. Which is why I wouldn't use it despite having a Scottish DH, as I can't say it easily. Grin

ColintheCrow · 01/06/2016 15:38

Ooh I have a nine year old Lochlann. Pronounced Loch-lon more so than Loch-lun... we're in Ireland.

LongChalk · 01/06/2016 16:58

Colin, you have an Irish child whose name is spelt and pronounced the Irish way. I have seen Irish children with both your spelling and spelt, Lauchlann, both pronouncing it 'Lochlun'.

Salmotrutta · 01/06/2016 18:54

Whether you are Irish or Scottish the "ch" is not pronounced as "ck".

So all those Locks and Lacks are wrong.

Thoughtfulduck · 03/06/2016 22:00

I know a very cute Lachlan pronounced lock-lun. Nn Lockie which is very cute on him.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/06/2016 22:35

It's hard to describe how to pronounce the "ch" - sort of a throaty hhhggg Confused

So anyway....Lach with the ch as in loch and then lan.

Salmotrutta · 04/06/2016 01:30

Thoughtfulduck - the Lachlan you know may well be very cute.

But pronouncing the "ch" as "ck" is wrong.

And his name is Lach-lun.

That's ^Laaach-lun".

(Ch pronounced as in "loch")

Salmotrutta · 04/06/2016 01:33

Onemagnum - no.

In Scotland the "Lach" is said with the "aah" pronunciation.

Numberoneisgone · 04/06/2016 01:48

Loch lun would be my version of the name. I don't hear a huge difference between the Scottish and Irish version it is pretty subtle.

Salmotrutta. I'm Scottish, I know how to pronounce it. [Hmm] I sat next to one for many years. Anyway it was the ch sound I was describing not the a sound if you read the post.
