I haven't heard it before but it means blackbird. I'm assuming it's pronounced Low-nan....

I think a blackbird is Lon dubh. I have never heard this name before but if you like it, go for it!

magicstar1 · 31/05/2016 18:47

It means little blackbird. Nice name, and pretty unusual. I work in the Irish language business, and it's not a name I'd come across often.

babyblabber · 31/05/2016 19:02

I'm Irish and have never heard of it

babyblabber · 31/05/2016 19:03

Sorry pressed post too soon!

Are you sure it's not Ronan you're thinking of?

Jeanniejampots80 · 31/05/2016 19:03

Also Irish and have never heard of it

MrsJayy · 31/05/2016 19:04

People will hear Ronan everytime you say it

LillyVonSchtupp · 31/05/2016 19:05

Another Irish and I've never heard of it.

I think you'd be setting him up to be misheard as Ronan or Conan for his entire life tbh.

MrsJayy · 31/05/2016 19:05

Or Logan i dont like it

MyBeard · 31/05/2016 19:07

I went to school with a lonan. Pronounced low-nan. No one struggled to pronounce it or got it confused with another name

LadyAntonella · 31/05/2016 19:09

I've never heard it either and I'm Irish. It might get mistaken for Ronan, Conan or possibly Logan if that bothers you at all. Otherwise I think it's ok. The 'lone' or 'low' sound is a little bit off putting to my ear, but it's a nice name.

TreeBird16 · 31/05/2016 19:13

Also Irish and never heard of it.
Is it an anglicised spelling? It's a bit too "Shawn" for my taste

TreeBird16 · 31/05/2016 19:14

I would pronounce it Lo-naa-n btw

Bumski · 31/05/2016 19:21

Nope, deffo Lonan, a few Saint Lonans and it's also a place name. I guess it's just quite unusual!

I'm Irish and had never heard of it so I googled it. The correct spelling is Lonán which is pronounced Luh-nawn. You're missing a fada in your spelling. It is nice, I might keep it for my list, if we have another baby Smile

LonestarStateOfMind · 31/05/2016 19:27

It's a lovely name.

Artandco · 31/05/2016 19:29

I haven't heard of it. If I saw I would assume 'lon- Ann'

Bringmewineandcake · 31/05/2016 19:30

I like it! Never heard it before.

Bumski · 31/05/2016 19:38

The only very small things that put me off are 'Lonan the loner' or the fact if you rearrange the letters it's 'o anal'.... Possible teenage boys piss taking, or am I overthinking this?!

The correct spelling is Lonán which is pronounced Luh-nawn

I really love this^^ pronunciation. Not that I'm an Irish expert or anything - I can barely speak a word of Irish!

It's absolutely lovely though.

MyBeard · 31/05/2016 20:35

You're over thinking it! Never happened to the one I was at school with Smile

MumOnACornishFarm · 01/06/2016 13:31

I always thought this was pronounced low-nun or low-nan, I would never think to say it luh-nawn and I can't imagine many would, outside of Ireland that is. I'm not mad about it personally. I prefer the scottish Lochlan/Lachlan, which is in a similar vein.
