Not short for anything just stand alone 'Alex'.

What comes to mind first, boy or girl name?

Boy, there is a girl in ds class called Alix and I think this spelling is even more masculine so was surprised to discover it belonged to a girl.

SingingSands · 24/05/2016 20:03

This is unhelpful... but both came to mind. I love it for either sex and think it's a cool name.

EllenDegenerate · 24/05/2016 20:06

Boy

AuntieStella · 24/05/2016 20:08

Either.

It's one of the very few names as see as totally unisex

MariaSklodowska · 24/05/2016 20:11

Either

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 24/05/2016 20:31

I always imagine a very sporty and athletic long dark haired, dark eyed girl. When I hear the name Alex

ZenNudist · 24/05/2016 20:32

Either it's a truly unisex name, strong for either gender. I have one so I approve 😏

Littleconfettiblue · 24/05/2016 20:34

Boy

And the lion from Madagascar

Ffion3107 · 24/05/2016 20:39

When I saw the thread as 'Alex' I did think boy.
But reading your post, I think it's a good, strong name for a girl too!

LicoriceComfit · 24/05/2016 20:41

Boys.

Stands line girls name would be Alix.

LicoriceComfit · 24/05/2016 20:41

Standalone!

MouldyPeach · 24/05/2016 20:43

Thanks everyone, it's my DC's name, we wanted an androgynous name and it was between Alex and Jamie, Pax, Billy, Rae or Taylor. The choice was the right one and I love it am just surprised at assumptions I've encountered when they haven't been wearing their allocated gender colour ;)

I like it for either. My brother is called Alex, and I used to work with a girl who spelled it Alix.

MouldyPeach · 24/05/2016 20:44

I think of Alex the lion too and get a Chris Rock zebra Aaaaalex in my head all the time Grin

julfin · 24/05/2016 22:08

I think of it as both. I know more male Alexes, so that would be my initial assumption ( if I was told someone's name before meeting them in person) but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a female. I think it's a good strong name for both genders.

DramaAlpaca · 24/05/2016 22:11

My immediate thought is boy.

StarTastic · 24/05/2016 22:13

Love it, for either.

tigerdriverII · 24/05/2016 22:13

Lovely name. I've worked recently with a male Alex and a female Alex and it's a good strong name. I would probably call a girl Alexandra and a boy Alexander but there's no need to do that. Preferable to Xander, which only seems to get used for boys and does conjure up the strawberry cords.

BuggertheTabloids · 24/05/2016 22:18

Girl every time for me. But then I'm biased!

omri · 24/05/2016 22:20

Biased too! Girl here too :) Grin

Pipilangstrumpf · 25/05/2016 09:02

Girl (I know 2)

ShanghaiDiva · 25/05/2016 09:07

Boy - but it's a fabulous name for either gender.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 25/05/2016 09:16

I initially thought girl. I know a girl Alex, just Alex. Actually really like it for a girl, thinking about it. I don't really have an opinion on it for a boy.

20thcenturybitch · 25/05/2016 09:17

Initial assumption boy but great girl's name too.

For those mentioning the name Alix, that's a French girl's name, pronounced "Al-eex".

septembersunshine · 25/05/2016 09:47

My husband in Alexander and goes by Alex so I'd think it was for a boy. We do know a female Alex and she is Alexandra. It could be either. I love it.
