The OP asked for opinions about a name. People gave opinions about the name. Surely better to give a reason why you don't like the name than just saying nope, hate it. People have lots of reasons for not liking particular names and noone is saying, "don't call your child that because I know a horrible person with the name", they are just saying they personally don't like it. Should we only go on naming threads to say, "Yes. Love it. Gorgeous name"?

I dislike it, it sounds dour and malodorous.

Op asked for opinions on the name. People gave opinions about people they know with the name, not the name itself. Why would she want opinions on the character of the people that internet randoms know with that name?

Because as with many things in life, people often have likes or dislikes for things based on associations. I don't like the name because of what I personally associate it with. It's human nature.

One of my friends has a Saul. He is a lovely boy. It's unusual, but not totally 'out there'. And I like biblical names anyway

I like it. I like Sol (Solomon) too.
