Have settled on either Alexander or Edward for DS due in a week. Surname is similar to Brown so think either would go.
Which name would you choose? I am worried I won't be able to choose between the two.

Both good names. I prefer Alexander. Why not just wait until he arrives, he may suit one more than the other. Will you use the other as a middle name or do you have another middle name in mind?

julfin · 15/05/2016 08:17

My personal preference is Alexander, but Edward is nice too. Both are really good solid traditional names. If you do want to use the other as middle name, both AE and EA sound nice.

Another advantage of Alexander over Edward is that, as you've got a fairly popular surname, there's a risk that there could be another Edward brown or Alexander brown in his school etc. And with Alexander there's greater scope for a wide variety of nicknames (Alex, Al, Lexi, Lex, Alexi, Lexin, Xander, Xan, Sander, San, Sandy, Zandy, Andy etc) which reduces the risk of confusion between the two - although tbf Edward does have more than one obvious nn too (Ed, Eddy, Teddy) but not as many.

Alexander, Edward is too popular for me

PunkAssMoFo · 15/05/2016 08:35

Edward.
Alexander is very popular, I know so many (& I don't like it).

Luckystar1 · 15/05/2016 08:36

I prefer Edward. I'm always in the minority but I find Alexander very wishy washy and unless you select and call him by your preferred nickname (thus basically ceasing to use Alexander) he will invariably be called Alex (which I personally really, really dislike)

BubsAndMoo · 15/05/2016 08:37

Edward. Ted is a really cute nn :)

1horatio · 15/05/2016 09:07

I prefer Edward :)
I don't like Alexander, tbh.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 15/05/2016 09:11

Oh definitely Edward. Nicknames are cute, Ed, Eddie, Teddy, Ted, Woody...

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/05/2016 11:53

Oh definitely Edward, as pp says there are better opportunities for NN's that there are for Alexander. Such as Ed Eddie Ned, Ted, Teddy.

SorenaJ · 15/05/2016 15:43

Edward is lovely.

RaeSkywalker · 15/05/2016 15:46

Edward.

TeradelFuego · 15/05/2016 15:56

Alexander is lovely. Edward is fine, but just a bit stuffy by comparison.

originalmavis · 15/05/2016 15:57

I like Alexander.

Winterbiscuit · 15/05/2016 16:42

I like both but think Edward goes better with your surname.

sodabreadjam · 15/05/2016 16:46

Love both.

In Scotland Alexander can be Alex, Alec, Xander (Zander) and Sandy.

Love Edward too - Ted, Teddy, Eddie.

Not helping, am I?

Good choices - classic names.

septembersunshine · 15/05/2016 16:51

Alexander. It's such a handsome, strong, classic name with tons of history. Edward sounds very stiff. I don't like Eddie for a nickname or he would just be Ed. Ed. Yuck!

Sophronia · 15/05/2016 22:25

Edward

CakeRattleandRoll · 16/05/2016 17:31

Edward

joyfulworld · 17/05/2016 07:16

I love Edward.

RubyRedandWilson · 17/05/2016 09:03

Prefer Edward

n0ne · 17/05/2016 10:44

Much prefer Edward, know far too many Alexanders

hobybabo · 17/05/2016 10:50

Alexander is my favourite boy name ever! So many nickname possibilities. Edward is ok, but nowhere near as nice as Alexander.

LemonBreeland · 17/05/2016 10:56

Edward

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/05/2016 11:01

Alexander
