I really like the girl's name Florence but worried it may be a bit old-fashioned? Would love some honest opinions Smile

Nice but way, way too common now.

LadyAntonella · 11/05/2016 20:31

I love it! It is very popular now (round here anyway) if that bothers you at all.

FurryTurnip · 11/05/2016 20:34

Love it, and would have had it for a girl, but very popular as others say. I know 3 at DSs nursery.

Bellasima20 · 11/05/2016 20:53

Don't like it, to me its a bit flouncy/too wholesome without having a lighter/pretty edge.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/05/2016 20:57

Its my dd's middle name, she often says she wishes was her first name. The only reason I didn't use it was she is mixed race and would likely have very curly hair (which she does) and my DM frightened me with talk of floss/candy floss

paperdreams16 · 11/05/2016 21:04

I love Florence - perhaps biased as work with a lovely 6 year old one! She's mainly Floss or Flo at school. I don't think it's old fashioned, in fact as others have said it's very popular right now although I don't know if that's a concern for you.

sorry I think 'florence and the machine' or 'aunty flo' which the americans use when discussing their period.

BallerinaBecky · 02/09/2016 15:41

It sounds cumbersome to me and I don't find it pretty. It is almost the opposite of elegant.

But that said, it is fine. For me it belongs in the same category of names like Margaret, May, Ellen, Rebecca etc.

Caldini22 · 02/09/2016 16:06

I'm not a big fan

BipBippadotta · 02/09/2016 16:22

Almost every girl I know under the age of 3 in North London is called Florence.

Barefootcontessa84 · 02/09/2016 16:49

It is quite popular but I love it - if I didn't have an 'F' surname then it would be high on my list!

FuzzyWizard · 02/09/2016 18:30

I've taught a couple of teenage Florence's. Both lovely girls.

FuzzyWizard · 02/09/2016 18:40

Apologies for rogue apostrophe

bibbitybobbityyhat · 02/09/2016 18:48

Great name!

pinocchiosnose · 02/09/2016 19:05

I really didn't like it at all until I met a little girl called Florence and it just suited her. I am a convert

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/09/2016 19:07

I know a 4 yr old Florence, she's ace, and the name really suits her. She is Flo for short.

MarriedinMaui · 02/09/2016 19:11

How is Flora a shortening of Florence? They both have 2 syllables

Ilovewineandcrisps · 02/09/2016 19:14

Absolutely love it!

WaitrosePigeon · 02/09/2016 22:32

I have a Florence. We obviously think it's beautiful Grin

She's nearly 4 and it wasn't popular at all back when we named her. I was worried about it being shortened to Flo or any other nickname but we've always introduced her as Florence and nobody has yet shortened it.

It has become popular now though, which I suppose is a shame - but I can see why. It's lovely.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/09/2016 22:34

As Bonnie says 'aunt Flo'. Flo reminds me of period Flo on the tampax boxes.
Also it's a very long name for a pre-schooler to write, so may be quite tricky for them. It's definitely an old lady name, but then we like old lady names.

She's a Florence Iris. Iris after my grandmother.
