Which do you prefer, Elspeth or Flora?

Love them both!

Very difficult to choose between them as they are both lovely .

LadyAntonella · 28/04/2016 14:29

Which one goes better with surname? I'd go with that.

GoldPlatedBacon · 28/04/2016 14:32

Elspeth.

FlappyRose · 28/04/2016 14:32

Elspeth is a beautiful name. Flora is margarine, sorry.

29redshoes · 28/04/2016 14:34

I like Flora

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 28/04/2016 14:38

Elspeth, definitely, it's so pretty!

Sunbeam18 · 28/04/2016 14:45

Definitely Flora! Elspeth is awful!

Flopsyhopsy · 28/04/2016 14:53

Another vote for Flora. I don't like Elspeth at all, it sounds strange, like Elisabeth said incorrectly.

LadyAntonella · 28/04/2016 14:57

I've heard the margarine argument against Flora but tbh I don't think anyone I know uses it any more. It's definitely not as well known a product as when I was growing up so I really don't think children born now would make the link. Plus the name Flora is more popular now I think, so most people would think of the name before the marg!

Cosycottage4 · 28/04/2016 15:16

Flora! I don't like elspeth at all

DeepInFrance · 28/04/2016 15:23

Another vote for Flora. Makes me think of flowers. Elspeth sounds like a mouthful of kipper bones.

Jojay · 28/04/2016 15:26

Flora is beautiful.

KoalaDownUnder · 28/04/2016 15:26

Flora.

Elspeth is lispy and difficult to say.

ABitAsleep · 28/04/2016 16:27

Flora is much nicer! I don't think of the margarine reference (and i even use the product!) but it makes me think of flowers and florals :)

Elspeth is a bit... just not as nice. Bit of a mouthful. Looks like Elizabeth spelt wrong.

n0ne · 28/04/2016 17:42

I think I prefer Elspeth. Flora is nice but I prefer Fleur.

Sophronia · 28/04/2016 17:46

Elspeth! Much more interesting than Flora.

Artandco · 28/04/2016 17:49

Flora.

Elspeth is very lispy to me

Flora Elisabetta
Flora Elizabeth
Flora Lilibet

Misnomer · 28/04/2016 17:54

Elspeth, definitely. It's beautiful - and also the Scottish version of Elizabeth for those saying it sounds like Elizabeth pronounced strangely.

DontKillMyVibe · 28/04/2016 18:15

Really don't like Elspeth so Flora. Or Fleur as another poster suggested

HighDataUsage · 28/04/2016 19:30

Elspeth is one of my favourites. My Professor at university was named Elspeth and she was super smart and lovely.

A4Document · 28/04/2016 21:26

Elspeth

I can't sleep so I began to think about my children, like you do...

I wondered how many people share their full names?
As I began to search for the names we gave to our first child I very quickly came across this thread.

I have joined mumsnet so that I can share our personal experience with you.

We chose the name Flora Elspeth for our daughter twenty eight years ago. Since then we have hardly met any Flora's, fewer Elspeth's (or Elsbeth's a seriously considered option!) and not one Flora Elspeth!

Apparently this is a fairly uncommon combination of given names.

Initially we encountered a few comments about the daughter of Sara Keyes and Norman Parkinson and inevitably, there were a few who made mindless comments about margarine, but... they only ever did it once!

I believe that the way a child hears themself addressed by others, has some influence on how that child perceives themself and how they develop. These names are both beautiful and lyrical which makes them fairly difficult to say convincingly with anger in the voice; I think, all things considered, this has to be good for the psyche of the person being addressed.
I can't prove how much a name influences how a child will grow up, I have just formed this opinion based on life experiences.

However, from day one, our Flora Elspeth has grown in inner beauty as well as having the blessing of physical beauty. She is a fun loving, strong willed, hard working, determined & deeply caring young woman who has a powerful sense of justice.

We are have always been very proud of who she is!

So consider joining us... Become a one in, who knows how many, millions parent, by choosing the unusual combination of both of these lovely names for your daughter!
XX :)

PS
Florence & Eleanor were close runners up! :)

Bellasima20 · 29/04/2016 07:01

I knew an Elspeth at school and every time I heard her name i imagined a slow, dopey, slightly irritating person...which sadly she was! Elspeth also sounds like someone saying it has a lisp and is actually pronouncing another name, wrong. Flora more punchy and pretty, definitely.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 29/04/2016 07:10

Much prefer Elspeth to Flora.

Also like Ishbel.

julfin · 29/04/2016 07:12

Both lovely. Elspeth is more unusual. (There are lots of Ellies/Ellas though.)
