Frédéric or Frederick, do they sound old?

My husband and I are expecting our first child together in August, it's a boy and the first name we both chose was Frederick. Hubby likes it more than I do, however when I told my mum and sisters they found it funny and said it sounds like an old man's name. I like the meaning, but now I'm not too sure. One of them said "You carry your child for 9 months just to name him Frederick?" Which I find quite hurtful. I would like suggestions on names that are respectable, but trendy at the same time. I don't want to hear nasty comments from family members, it's making me feel a little insecure. Confused

Frederick is a great name - timeless and works well in lots of languages

This has been my DH's boy choice of name since before we where evenue together. He has always loved it. Yesterday I was on the subject with family members and they just laughed like yours did.

I agree with others: don't tell anyone else your names (apart from invisible people on here)
It's your baby and you can call them what you like!

For the record I also like the name Frederick.

Thanks everyone for all your advise and suggestions. They've been very helpful, I definitely won't be sharing anymore names with family and will surely stick to my choice. SmileGrinI'm feeling much more confident after your positive advise.

Google Prince Frederick of Denmark. Hello your royal highness!

I think it's a great name and I have never had any negative comments about choosing it.

septembersunshine · 02/05/2016 18:54

We have just chosen this for our bump (if we have a boy) and I took a little time to get used to it (I wanted Harry but it's super popular). Now I think I really like it. It's got a lot of history and we have a very plain surname so it adds a little something. Freddie is CUTE! Go for it.

Are you or your DH French, OP?

septembersunshine · 02/05/2016 20:54

Plus Fred on it's own is really cool (although it might just be me that thinks this!). Have you got a middle name yet OP? Just be very vague with family and friends from now on!

mamijo · 21/05/2016 20:38

Thanks again for the advice. SmileSmile

First of all... definitely Frederick over Frédéric

I think it's very old-fashioned but I don't think that's a bad thing, it's a nice name - especially when shortened to Freddy.

mamijo · 21/05/2016 21:11

Yes my dad is from a French speaking country. So my sisters and I all have French names - middle names, however my husband likes the French spelling.

I think I'll go for Frederick. The accents on Frédéric are overbearing. Confused

Its very much in fashion atm, so hardly 'old man' (Anyone who tells you, is categorically wrong because its back in a bit way)

I know several Freddies.

frobskottle · 22/05/2016 11:43

I love it and would use it. Freddie or Ricky are great nicknames

1horatio · 22/05/2016 13:03

Frederick is lovely! It sounds strong and one of the smartest and nicest men I know is called Frederick (so I'm probably biased... But it isn't my DH). And Freddie is a cute nn :)!

I also like Alfred and Yorick (which is Breton form of George).

Frédéric looks very Hyacinth Bucket.

Frederick is a perfectly ordinary name. Go with that.
