Monty... What's it short for?

DP and I love the name Monty, but obviously would choose a longer name for full name with Monty being a shortened version.

DP likes Montgomery, and I cant help feeling its an old man name. I just couldnt imagine a little boy called Montgomery.

I found Montague in the book we have, though my concern is that everyone has heard of Montgomery, but would they know of a Montague, or would it sound a bit "made up"

What would you choose? Any other options gratefully received too!

If it makes any difference we have a Felix already.

Montmorency is an epic name, and soooo cute for a little chap as Monty.

FishWithABicycle · 25/04/2016 05:15

Ah I came on here to see if anyone had mentioned Montmorency. Also Montezuma.

DropYourSword · 25/04/2016 05:20

I was also about to say Montezuma

CoolforKittyCats · 25/04/2016 05:46

It made me think of Montgomary Burns from the Simpsons

Me too.

Expatmomma · 25/04/2016 06:18

I know 2 Montys both come from army families so I guess they are shortened from Montgomery... A significant name in British military history.

I would vote for Montgomery known as Monty.

WellErrr · 25/04/2016 06:27

Also made me think of Mr Burns.

Montague is a lovely old name though, I'd use that.

Leigh1980 · 25/04/2016 06:31

What about using the name Montell?

Monty means a Mountain of the Ruler and is an awesome name 👍😄

moonface1978 · 25/04/2016 06:36

Montmorency

Well, as an adult, he'll probably introduce himself as Monty in informal settings, unless he prefers Montgomery or Montague.

By giving him a long version, you are giving him options. (Then have to accept he might not use the options the way you would!)

Uncle Monty

Monty... What's it short for?
ApocalypseSlough · 25/04/2016 11:46

Martin nn Monty is a fantastic idea as it gives wriggle room in later life and will raise no eyebrows.
Lovely Saint Martin

LadyAntonella · 25/04/2016 13:14

Yes Mitzy!

I know 2 montys both have Monty on the birth certificate.

A4Document · 25/04/2016 13:30

I think Monty on the birth certificate would be fine. It could also be short for Montgomery or Montague.

If you don't mind having a full name that isn't related to the nickname, then Martin. But I'd see Marty, not Monty as short for Martin (wouldn't it be Montin, Monty for short?)

prettybird · 25/04/2016 13:43

The Monty I know is because his surname is Lamont.

Gummibaers · 25/04/2016 14:49

Martin and Monty are completely different names imo. You might as well choose any name and nickname your child Monty then.

I wouldn't choose a nickname if I didn't like the full versions of it (which imo for Monty are either Montgomery or Montague).

badtime · 26/04/2016 00:25

Here are some names ending 'mont': www.babynamespedia.com/end/m/mont

The most usable ones (to my mind) are Beaumont or Lamont, but there are a couple of the others that I think would grow on me ('Stop that, Esmont!')

Most of them look like typos, though.
