Hi everyone,

Asking on behalf of a friend with this one. What do you think?

Thanks :)

I think it's lovely! I know a couple of Maireads my age and they don't seem to mind their names! One has Irish parents and the other doesn't Smile

Notthisnotthat · 17/04/2016 20:34

Love it! Reminds me of my very lovely English teacher.

DuchessofQuirm · 17/04/2016 20:34

Are you in Ireland or Scotland? If neither then be prepared for no one being able to pronounce it or spell it. I love it though, we use the Scottish version (My rid).

I like it

DramaAlpaca · 17/04/2016 21:43

Beautiful name.

Mrsmulder · 17/04/2016 21:54

Lovely name, it was on my list for dd but we have an 'm' surname so decided against it. I am in England and I think people would be fine with pronunciation here but irish names are popular in my region

LonestarStateOfMind · 17/04/2016 22:33

It's a really lovely name.

Unfortunately I now associate it with Mairead Philpott Sad

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 17/04/2016 22:37

Me too Lonestar Sad

dancemom · 17/04/2016 22:41

How would you pronounce it? Irish or Scottish? Mah-raid or My-rid?

HeadsTailsHillsandDales · 17/04/2016 23:19

DD was almost a Mairead - the Scottish pronounciation (My-redt). It's lovely. But we decided against it as I was fairly sure that she'd get "Mi-raid" more often than not, even in Scotland and certainly elsewhere. I don't love the Irish pronounciation in the same way (but possibly just because we are not Irish!).

squoosh · 17/04/2016 23:24

I'm not hugely keen. Even less keen on the Scottish pronunciation.

WhatILoved · 18/04/2016 07:26

I just think of that horrid philpot lady sorry!

DerelictMyBalls · 18/04/2016 09:13

I really like it.

Haven't heard of Mairead Philpott (and don't think I want to)

MollyCule · 18/04/2016 13:09

This is my sister's middle name and I have always really liked it. I'm Irish and didn't realise that there's a different Scottish pronunciation. I also have an Irish name and personally wouldn't worry about the issue of spelling, as long as people can pronounce it when they're told what it should be.

Floralnomad · 18/04/2016 13:11

I also automatically think Philpott ,sorry .

pinkcan · 18/04/2016 13:14

I also think of Mairead Philpott Sad

Brightside65 · 19/04/2016 07:29

My friends name, which a couldn't spell for years. She said it's been a great conversation starter when she introduces herself

LadyAntonella · 19/04/2016 12:57

I also immediately think Philpott sorry. Even if I didn't, I don't really like it.

I kind of like Maura though which is similar.

TheKingSits · 19/04/2016 13:07

I'm in Scotland and have only ever heard the Mah - raid pronunciation... I know one aged 30 and one aged 3.

midsomermurderess · 21/04/2016 19:34

Was my mother's name, with the Irish pronounciation , so I'm fond of it. Is it not regarded as old-fashioned in Ireland now though?

ArmfulOfRoses · 21/04/2016 19:47

I love it, it makes me think of one of my oldest friends (we're mid thirties), and she is wonderful.
She is Irish so it's mer-raid.

IoraRua · 21/04/2016 21:24

To me it's a middle aged name, sorry. But if you live abroad and that doesn't bother you then I imagine it's not an issue.
Nothing wrong with it otherwise.

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 22/04/2016 15:13

I have a friend named Mairead, not middle aged, but in her early 20s! I remember she was impressed that I could both pronounce her name correctly and knew how to spell it, so I think she does have trouble with people not being able to do either!

aquashiv · 25/04/2016 12:34

Lovely name.
