Thoughts on this name?
Gross? Old fashioned? Definite no-no? Or due a comeback?
Thanks!

I like it a lot!

LadyAntonella · 18/04/2016 12:28

I don't really like it, nor do I like Marie. It's just my personal taste and to do with the sound rather than it being 'old fashioned' (I love old fashioned names).

ABitAsleep · 18/04/2016 14:01

Not keen. Never have been.

Reminds me of the Sound of Music and a middle-aged, tatooed and pierced women who works in a craft shop near me (It doesn't really suit her)

Thank you for range of opinions. :)

It's fine but a bit boring IMO. I knew loads of Marie's and Maria's at school and uni. Admittedly Maria is a lot better than Marie. I'm sure a load of my friends' mums are also called Marie/Maria...

KatOnATinRo0f · 19/04/2016 18:37

I've always disliked the name but if I have a girl it will be her name. (DH's mum's name, cultural reasons)
I've been trying to get used to it... And actually I heard a mum calling a little girl at an airport recently, and it started to warm to me a little. Probably because this little kid was so cute and playing around and made me feel broody. Admittedly it's still very very far down on my dream list.

I like it a lot. Works well in most languages too.

SecretNutellaFix · 20/04/2016 17:23

It's my name. I am in my mid thirties.

I now love my name.
I hated it as a teenager, due to everybody singing some sort of song at me, or quoting the Sound of Music at me. My history teacher especially used to sing "How do you solve a problem like Maria" at me if I was late handing in homework, which actually put me off doing it completely because by my rationale, the teachers already considered me to be a problem because of my name. All bullshit of course, but I had no one to work this through with and I bitterly regret it 20+ years later.
However it has a long and distinguished history- not all good, but certainly distinguished.
It is recognised pretty much the world over, and most people pronounce it the same way. Ma-ree-a.
It is a classic- I don't think you can actually "date" a person called Maria- I know them aged between 8 and 65.
WARNING. People are lazy when it comes to pronouncing it sometimes and I often get Marie, which drives me nuts but it says more about them than it does about me.

It is a pretty name, and my parents chose this variant as a less common variant than Marie (at the time). I was named for my grandmother who was Mary, and they wanted to distinguish between us.

I say go for it.

HelenaJustina · 20/04/2016 17:25

Love it, only know one under 18 named it.

TealLove · 20/04/2016 17:27

I don't like it

KatOnATinRo0f · 05/05/2016 16:46

I like there is so much positivity I expected mostly negativity for the name.
Also thank you Nutella for your insight :)

Beautiful, classy, elegant.

chickindude · 05/05/2016 22:16

My middle name, grandmothers name & cousins name.
It is spelt weirdly though. Mariae. Still pronounced the same.

Limelight · 05/05/2016 22:20

It's my name too - I was named after my Grandfather (but that's another story). I had a very similar experience to Nutella - lots of similar stories in fact Smile. And I'm in my late 30s.

I'm totally biased of course but I love my name. It's always felt very grown up and beautiful.

Tomfunsnumber1trolley · 05/05/2016 22:56

At the risk of outing myself this is my name but pronounced the old fashioned English way - as in Twelth Night, sister of the Brontes, Jane Austen etc. I like it and like having the unusual pronunciation but generally get called by the more normal pronunciation. Doesn't bother me too much but don't really understand when I get Marie, Moira, Myra, and other weird interpretations.

KatOnATinRo0f · 06/05/2016 13:30

I must be uneducated as I don't know what the old English pronunciation is!!

OP posts:
butteredmuffin · 06/05/2016 13:35

It's Mar-eye-a rather than Mar-ee-a.

BeckyWithTheMediocreHair · 06/05/2016 15:30

I love mah-rye-a but you'd have to spell it Mariah to be sure of the correct pronunciation.
