Thoughts on Rumi?

How does Rumi sound to you for a girl of mixed Asian-Caucasian origin?

(yes you can tell I really like short simple yet a bit unusual names!)

It sounds pretty and it would work well if you are Japanese or have connections with Japan (it's a Japanese name, isn't it?). However - and this may not matter - it also sounds the same as the name of one of the world's most famous poets: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumi His work is as well-known as Shakespeare's in many countries - maybe better-known in some - and is widely respected.

DH is from Hong Kong, but I don't like how most traditional HK names sound like so I am looking for a name that uses Cantonese sounds/words (and can be written in Chinese characters).

All the names I listed are formed by Chinese/Cantonese words. Honestly I don't really care too much about the meaning in Cantonese, as long as it can be written/ pronounced in Chinese easily.

I instantly thought it was a nod to the poet Rumi. I think anyone else who knows of him will have that thought too, as it's an unusual first name.

It would be written Rumi and pronounced Roomee (if that makes sense, I am not great at phonetic spelling). One word.

Rumi's poetry is amazing - spiritual, playful, joyful.

I like Nala...was on my list for dd2 until some said 'Nala the gnarler' which made me picture a snappy mutt and that put me off :-(

Sorry but if someone told me their name was Rumi if primly hear/write it as Roomy, not a massive fan. I love Nala though and Mila.

I wanted to call DS that it was a nod at the poet - we didn't go for it as we were concerned about bullying at school as it will be roomy inevitably in English as opposed to how it is pronounced (slight different enunciation)

Still think it's a lovely name
