Thoughts on Rumi?

How does Rumi sound to you for a girl of mixed Asian-Caucasian origin?

Other ideas are:

Dami
Mila
Nala
Nami

(yes you can tell I really like short simple yet a bit unusual names!)

I like it.

Mila and Nala are nice too.

Roo-me or rum-me?

Lilylo · 17/04/2016 14:56

Roo-me!

It sounds pretty and it would work well if you are Japanese or have connections with Japan (it's a Japanese name, isn't it?). However - and this may not matter - it also sounds the same as the name of one of the world's most famous poets: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumi His work is as well-known as Shakespeare's in many countries - maybe better-known in some - and is widely respected.

I like Mila, Nala and Nami.

Vixxfacee · 17/04/2016 17:49

Don't like rumi but like remi
I like mila and nala. Do you like Nyla?

Nami is ok and I've heard it short for namiko

flora I did not know about the poet, thank you a lot for letting me know! I will definitely look it up.

DH is from Hong Kong, but I don't like how most traditional HK names sound like so I am looking for a name that uses Cantonese sounds/words (and can be written in Chinese characters).

All the names I listed are formed by Chinese/Cantonese words. Honestly I don't really care too much about the meaning in Cantonese, as long as it can be written/ pronounced in Chinese easily.

I instantly thought it was a nod to the poet Rumi. I think anyone else who knows of him will have that thought too, as it's an unusual first name.

Twitterqueen · 17/04/2016 18:07

Nope. Roo-me.... lots of space in there? How much space do you need?
Sorry

Lilylo · 17/04/2016 18:38

It would be written Rumi and pronounced Roomee (if that makes sense, I am not great at phonetic spelling). One word.

I like it. Cute.
Similar to rumer.
Which I also like.

thecatfromjapan · 17/04/2016 19:22

I thought of Rumi the poet, too. I had no idea it was Japanese. Mumsnet is so educational!

Rumi's poetry is amazing - spiritual, playful, joyful.Smile

nectarini1983 · 17/04/2016 20:53

I like Nala...was on my list for dd2 until some said 'Nala the gnarler' which made me picture a snappy mutt and that put me off :-(

AuntJane · 17/04/2016 21:04

I'm afraid when I read Rumi I thought ...

Cub

Kittykatmacbill · 17/04/2016 21:43

I would definitely assume the poet!

FluffyPickleMonster · 17/04/2016 21:48

Sorry but if someone told me their name was Rumi if primly hear/write it as Roomy, not a massive fan. I love Nala though and Mila.

FluffyPickleMonster · 17/04/2016 21:49

Whoops- meant I'd hear/write it

Castafioresbijoux · 19/04/2016 13:41

I wanted to call DS that Smile it was a nod at the poet - we didn't go for it as we were concerned about bullying at school as it will be roomy inevitably in English as opposed to how it is pronounced (slight different enunciation)

Still think it's a lovely name

Leahs93 · 19/04/2016 13:57

I really like the name Nala.

Tokelau · 19/04/2016 14:03

I like Mila out of those names.

I know a Runi, who is part Indian. Do you like that? It's pronounced similarly to your Rumi.
