If YOU have an Evie

Is she happy with her name? I have a wonderful 7 year-old Eve nn Evie, my only dd.

The name gets a regular bashing on MN and is often described as being one of those blurghh names "oh not another one". Posters say things like "beware that name might become the new Evie". My heart sinks every time I read another comment like that. Feel like I've messed up and she's stuck with it for life. I hear the name a lot - always another Evie at soft play or the park etc.

She was very nearly an Elizabeth which is much loved on here. Always wanted a dd called Lucy but sis got in there first so we used Evie. After joining Mumsnet I feel like I've called her a Tracey type name. My taste is much more Catherine, Charlotte, Harriet type names.

Obviously nothing I can do about it, it's up to her what she does with her name - just want to feel better about it I guess. Her middle name is 'trendy' too and also gets negative comments on here.

In real life Evie is fine. Round here, Ellie and Sophie are far more popular but I don't find myself sick of them.

MN tends towards über classical names from Shakespeare or names that you'll probably never hear in real life because they are so niche. I don't get the angst about having a top 100 name or one that's getting increasingly popular.

My oldest had a number 1 name but has never been in a class with another boy with the same name. In his y6 class (15 girls) there were 5(!) Sophies which wasn't even top 10 for his birth year.

Tbh most people like me wouldn't shoot down a comment like "not another Evie" because we cba to get het up by a sweet normal name.

superram · 17/04/2016 15:33

I have an Evie, no others in her school. Much less popular than Isobel.

CanadaMoose · 17/04/2016 16:14

I work at a nursery and we have 4 called Evie and another Eva. Last year we had an Evelyn. It's popular, yes, but it's lovely! I'd rather that than something overbearing and pretentious.

Dontrocktheboat · 17/04/2016 17:55

Hi I don't have an Evie, but I do have an eight year old called Isla (not quite the same spelling though valid, not made up alternative). I could therefore have written your post. However I have to think that the context in which I named her was different, I did check the popularity at the time but was not savvy enough to predict it was on the rise. Also didn't know any children at that time though was aware of what names were popular (Isabelle, Grace, Ruby etc) and avoided them ( funnily enough don't know any Graces or Rubies now, so popular names don't always equate to loads in a class at all.)

I also get upset when I see people make comments about the name being meh or everywhere at the moment, and worry about whether she will like her name - but I asked her recently and she seemed surprised by the question and don't think had given it any thought! There are currently no other Islas in her school, brownies, ballet or at my other child's nursery. But I do hear it out a lot usually being applied to a toddler, which stressses me out.

Anyway, I think Evie is a lovely name and will suit a grown up in any walk of life. There are only 2 in my kids' school, quite different ages. 2 Lucy's too which I personally find quite a dull name. Not keen on Elizabeth either.

JSarah · 17/04/2016 17:56

I love the name

Lilicat1013 · 17/04/2016 18:11

If it helps any I love the name, I only have boys but if I would have had a girl she would have been Eve with Evie as a nickname. I think it is a beautiful name, I wouldn't consider it trendy, it is popular but not trendy.

Stokey · 17/04/2016 19:13

I know quite a few Evies but still think it's a pretty name. To be honest anything starting with a vowel has been pretty popular over the last few years, there also seem to be plenty of Amelias, Ellas, Emilys etc around.

dd1 was playing a game yesterday where the main character where she was calling herself Tracey, so by the time we have grandchildren it'll swing round again!

fairgroundsnack · 17/04/2016 19:16

I've got an Evangeline with nn Evie - I love it and haven't seen any of the negative feedback! She is the only one in her year group (admittedly small year) and I only know a couple of others.

WhirlwindHugs · 17/04/2016 19:21

I suppose it's fairly popular but it's still a lovely name! Some people are just weird about not liking anything popular.

It's my youngest middle name, she has a very unusual first name and I choose Eve as a classic alternative. I like to think of the first Eve as the first scientist btw, choosing knowledge over ignorance...

DrunctioningFunk · 17/04/2016 19:24

Lovely name, and I have a ds toddler and in all the soft plays and playgroups etc I have never heard anyone call out for an Eve/ Evie so it can't be as common as some MNetters may think!!

I do often find myself wondering, when seeing a slating of a name on here, what exactly their children are called?! Surely all names are "common" to an extent (unless bizarrely made up?)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 17/04/2016 19:24

Don't know any Evies , none in DD's past nursery or in school. She's 6. It's a lovely name.

Lovelydiscusfish · 17/04/2016 19:51

It's a lovely name - that's why it is so popular. I hated having an unusual name as a child - absolutely detested it.

babyblabber · 17/04/2016 19:51

Do t let them get to you. I don't have an Evie (nearly had an Eva!) but I have a Noah, chosen partly because it was so unusual! Always slated on her and I've seen it described as 'wet' whatever that means. But I LOVE it and it suits him perfectly and I still think I am SO cool for picking it so I don't really give a sh!t what strangers online say. I know it's hard but try to ignore the nasty comments (and to those of you who've actually made nasty comments about the name Evie on this thread, where OP was clearly looking for some positive comments, you must be really delighted for a chance to kick someone while they're down, when you're lying in bed tonight maybe ask yourself what's upsetting you so much that you felt the need to do that).

Fwaffy · 17/04/2016 19:54

I think it's an absolutely beautiful name.

PersisFord · 17/04/2016 19:57

It's a beautiful, beautiful name. And it was my grandmother's name and she would be ancient if she was alive so it's hardly a modern invention. If it had gone with our surname we would def have used it. My baby boy has a name that seems unpopular with MN, that makes me love it more!! Grin

Jenkins38 · 17/04/2016 20:01

What a lovely, lovely lot you are. You have made me feel so much better about things today.

swancourt · 17/04/2016 20:05

MN is not a representative sample of the world - there are names in fashion on here and out of fashion everywhere else, and vice versa. Evie is a beautiful name no matter what the fashion.

I have an Isobel. There were none at any of her nurseries, none at her preschool, and now there are 3 (different spellings) in her year in reception (two form entry, so 1 in 10 girls is called Isobel). There are none in the year above, so this was slightly fluke. But screw it - I love her name, and she's a different Isobel from all the other Isobels I have ever (or will ever) meet :)

Also, I did the maths, and (if I remember rightly) even though Isobel/Isabel/Isabella/Isabelle add up to about 6000 girls in 2011, there were 300,000 girls born. So 1/50 had this name. Or 1/100 babies if you count the boys. So even the most common names are not that common.

You'd bump into loads of Elizabeths if you had an Elizabeth. You just notice them more when you've got a reason to notice them.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/04/2016 20:05

My eldest is Evelyn, Evie for short. She is 4 so it's hard to tell if she's happy with it or not. Wink

I frankly don't care how popular a name is. If DH and I like it and agree then that's what we'll call our children. It's hard enough to find agreement without worrying about popularity.

DD2 is Sophia. DC3, due in 5 weeks, will be something quite popular if a boy and a lot less popular if a girl. Finding a girl's name we both liked was VERY difficult this time!

Mottled · 17/04/2016 20:14

Name popularity is often down to area, there are no Eves in my DCs classes but there are 3 girls in one of their classes with the same much rarer name (although it is popular in E Europe where 2 of them are from). Eve is a classic name, in the same way that Adam is....hardly on trend.

Swirlingasong · 17/04/2016 20:33

I know how you feel as dc1's name gets a similar reaction on here. But, names are popular because in general people like them and Evie is a lovely name. You have not failed any more the parents of my generation's Claires, Sarahs and Kates failed. They are great names with the advantage that no one will be able to pigeon hole them: an Eve will be able to do anything she choses in any social circle without anyone batting an eyelid at her name. Persephone may find this more of a challenge.

DerelictMyBalls · 18/04/2016 08:07

Surely all names are "common" to an extent (unless bizarrely made up?)

Hmm
Jenkins38 · 18/04/2016 09:04

Babyblabber, Noah is lovely. I asked a group of my male friends which name they would love to be called and 3 of them said Noah! I've seen it slated on here for being too popular too quickly along with other popular names like Oscar, Lucas etc, which is ridiculous. I know lovely boys with these names. Someone on here once said the name Noah sounds like someone farting down a pipe - how wonderfully ridiculous!

haha! see you just can't let nut jobs off the internet influence your opinions/feelings!

bexh83 · 20/04/2016 22:28

Reading with interest - its still one of my top two girl names (due August). I love short classic names and this tops that list.

I always loved Ava which goes so nicely with my last name but my SIL named my niece that - so now im worried about anything too close sounding too!

Honestly, untill you mentioned it I hadnt read much flack about it and ive been keeping any eye out. Its lovely.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 20/04/2016 22:44

I have an 11 year old Evelyn, who tends to be called Evie. There has never been another Evie at her school, let alone in her class. (The 'popular' names seem to be Georgia, Amy and Rosie).

I do have some misgivings about her name becoming so popular since we named here. These largely stem from my name being very popular amongst my generation (there were 6 Sarah's in my class at primary school, and I've always disliked my name). But she likes her name. So I try not to think about it.
