Irish girls names - really stumped!

DS has an Irish name so this next bean that's coming along probably should vaguely match.

Boys names are fine -Irish boys names are cool!

Irish girls names on the other hand are proving impossible!

They are either names I went to school with & so have all 1980s schoolfriend associations (Emer, Ciara, Neasa, Orla etc)

Or are names that are chock full of dh, bh, mh etc. Not for me, tbh.

Are there any that are cool and modern and sleek sounding?

At the moment the only one I'm really liking is Cara, but I'm not madly in love with it or anything and I'd like more options!

(By the way at this stage am also thinking "vaguely celtic-y" will do too, as I'm really stumped)

I nearly used Einin for my DD

mathanxiety · 10/04/2016 23:25

That is lovely, SugarDiabetes.

There is at least one MNer with a DD whose name or middle name is Croi, which I love too.

CointreauVersial · 10/04/2016 23:31

Erin.

Not Irish, but means Ireland.

It is lovely. Only it's too much like our local pronunciation of 'ironing'!!

summerroses · 13/04/2016 15:16

Iseult is a beautiful name.

Correctly pronounced e sult rather than is ult

Isolde is German, isn't it?

I met an Edele once she was so beautiful and really charming and just made the name stand out as strong and feminine to me

Aine (Awn-ye)
Bridget
Brianna
Rosion

Loulabella · 16/04/2016 01:31

Tierna (teer nah) means 'female version of 'lord' or Mealla (mee lah, same pronunciation as Mila in Spanish) means 'lightening'.

justanotherdowntroddenmass · 16/04/2016 02:12

Nara

Starface · 16/04/2016 03:09

Edel can also be spelled Edel (blessed Edel Quinn)

I also like Grainne, which no one has mentioned yet. Though carries a danger of mispronunciation, but I think it's lovely.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 16/04/2016 03:11

Edel can also be spelled Edel. Now don't get me wrong. It doesn't take much granted, but I'm Confused.

mathanxiety · 16/04/2016 05:11

Tiarna is actually 'lord' in Irish. (Pronounced Tee-ur-na/teerna).

Tintreach is the Irish for lightning and 'éadromú' is Irish for lightening (of a load).

Mealla would be pronounced 'Myalla' in Irish. I don't think it's an Irish word though.
Mella is a name used in Ireland (infrequently). I think it's a pet form of Mary that stands alone, like Molly.

Starface · 16/04/2016 06:15

Sorry was written Edele a few posts up which I typed but autocorrected to Edel. 3 am proofreading clearly not up to MN scratch.

hollyisalovelyname · 16/04/2016 08:30

Sibéal
(Shib ale)

IoraRua · 16/04/2016 16:47

Meall is "to attract" in Irish. As mathanxiety says it's pronounced Myalla and does not mean lightening. Certainly not in modern Irish.

IoraRua · 16/04/2016 16:47

Grr, Myall not Myalla. If you wrote the verb as Mealladh that would be Myalla though.
