From a previous thread really. I think it's a pretty name but presumably not used at the moment? Out of interest can anyone cleverer than me find out how many babies were called Isis in the last year or two?

My cousins's 13 year old daughter was called Isis but she recently changed her name to Isabella.

About 5 -10 years ago, there was a large nightclub in Liverpool called Club Isis. It was very rough.

When I was little I remember being shocked that people were called 'Ira'. I was little...

WellErrr · 09/04/2016 07:47

You having a larf?? Hmm

IslaSinga · 09/04/2016 09:52

Wow canshop - that must have been difficult, but very understandable.

plimsolls · 09/04/2016 10:52

OP, I think the purpose of your post is quite clear. I'm not sure why all the Hmm faces.

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 09/04/2016 14:06

I'd absolutely still use it, it's a lovely name and the only association it has for me is the Egyptian goddess. I thought that those terrorists were supposed to be called Daesh now anyway?

originalmavis · 09/04/2016 14:12

Well I suppose you could argue that but it will be the first thing that comes to mind when they hear that name.

Some of the kids had a shock when they googled it for a school project about ancient Egypt.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/04/2016 14:19

I love the name Isis.

I'd be surprised if people used it for a newborn baby now sadly.

BoboBunnyH0p · 09/04/2016 14:53

There is an Isis at my DCs school think she's in year 2, when I first saw her name on the star of the week list I thought how unfortunate. I do hope she has a middle name so she can use that in the future if she chooses.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 09/04/2016 15:34

Dd1(16yrs) had an Isis in her year, she was getting so much stick for it (most of it from outside school) even though at her age it was obvious she was here first. She decided to swap the 2nd is arround and became Issi instead as she couldn't handle the comments and shocked stares/pointing. In the end her parents agreed to allow her to change her name officially and she chose the name Isobel. Everyone who knows her has been really supportive of the change and understands why she has chosen to.
It's a shame about the connotations the name produces as it is actually a lovely pretty sounding name.

Fauchelevent · 09/04/2016 15:39

I'm really unsure about the Hmm faces as well, the OP has said she's just wondering about stats. I wouldn't think it was completely out there that a few children might still be called Isis.

Hugh whatsisname also said that Isis was not written out of DA because of Islamic State. Could be lying but it would be so silly if they faced backlash over having a dog character's name, named after an Egyptian (?) goddess years before the islamic state idiots came onto the scene.

zoomtothespoon · 09/04/2016 17:03

DS was going to be Isis if he were a girl. I'm not sure what we would have done in the current situation though

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/04/2016 18:06

It would be weird wouldn't it zoom because your Isis would just be..well, Isis. I guess you might have started using her middle name?

It's such an unfortunate thing to happen to girls called Isis.

zoomtothespoon · 10/04/2016 19:44

Through I imagine so. I had my sons name tattooed in Arabic on my wrist. If he had been a girl called Isis and I had that tattooed on my wrist in Arabic I assure you that would have been swiftly lasered off!

TheNewStatesman · 11/04/2016 12:32

"She told us she gets regular abuse from people and hate mail. "

How shocking! :(

Ladycrazycat · 11/04/2016 21:15

I thought it was a lovely name...until the last couple of years! It must be tough for anyone called it and I wonder if it will cover.

That said, I have heard a few Ettas the last few years (slightly different as spelling is not the same as the terrorist group).

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 12/04/2016 21:54

DS2 would have been Isis if he had been a girl. I'm so glad he's a he.

Me too - DS (born 2012) would have been Isis. It's weird to imagine it now.

Lady Etta is/was high on my shortlist for any future daughters too. Blush I didn't even think about that connection. Argh.

originalmavis · 12/04/2016 21:58

"Isis, Etta, Red Brigade - get over here!"

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/04/2016 22:16

I think Etta is a bit different as its a shortening for Henrietta, and probably other names too. Whereas Isis is just Isis. Such a shame.
