Just that really....

How would you pronounce the name Helena? Also general opinion on name? Would she always be correcting people/spelling it? Am I overthinking this???

Thanks.

My sister is Hel-ay-na. She adds an accent to the second E (so Heléna). She usually gets "Layna" as a shortened name, but we also call her "Nayna".

Parsley1234 · 06/04/2016 20:04

I'm Hell ay na and get called Helena Heleena and mostly H I think a good nick name would be Leni

LonestarStateOfMind · 06/04/2016 20:58

The Helena I know pronounces her name as Hel-leee-na

Luciferbox · 06/04/2016 21:00

Did say Helen-a but now know two who go by Hell-en-na.

Nospringflower · 06/04/2016 21:19

My mum is a Hell- een - a.

DramaAlpaca · 06/04/2016 22:11

I pronounce it with the stress on the first syllable.

Finallyonboard · 06/04/2016 22:12

Helbel82 · 06/04/2016 23:54

I'm a He-len-a. I'm constantly being called Hel-een-a and Hel-layn-a which I really don't like and some people insist on calling me Helen which gets annoying. I used to dislike my name but really like it now as there aren't that many of us around!

NadiaWadia · 07/04/2016 00:12

Well it can be HELen-a (English, like Helena Bonham Carter), HeLAYna (Eastern European?), or HeLEEna (Irish). Some places probably pronounce it HeLENNa too (I am guessing this, as I know it's true of Elena).

So as we are in the UK, I'd probably assume HELen-a first, although I know HeLAYna is also popular. I like all the pronunciations. Very nice and classy name!

mathanxiety · 07/04/2016 01:44

Hell-EE-na or Helen-a (Irish).

ABitAsleep · 07/04/2016 09:57

I would either go for Hel-ay-nah or Helen-ah. I Don't really know, everytime i see this name it comes out differently! haha! But i do like it a lot!

HolgerDanske · 07/04/2016 10:02

Helen-a.

I used to prefer various pronunciations from abroad but having lived in the UK for a long time now this has become the version that sounds best to me.

It's a nice name and I don't think she'll have too much trouble with it.

JasperDamerel · 07/04/2016 10:06

Hell AY na, but I would probably check first as HELL enna or Hell EE na are also possible pronunciations.

Indecisiveness · 07/04/2016 12:08

We have an 11 week old Helena pronounced Helen-uh. Most people in England pronounce it as this although we have had a few Hel-ay-na's. When I was in Ireland everyone said Hel-ee-na which I really don't like. We actually call her Hattie as her older sisters used this name for her when she was born and we were struggling to decide on a name (she was almost Harriet and we loved the nn Hattie but preferred Hattie to Harriet so thought it best not to go with this IYKWIM). I do like Nell or Lena too. Most people seem to like the name and I haven't come across any others at DD1's school or DD2's nursery.

tormentil · 07/04/2016 12:15

I have a Helena. I'm so pleased I gave her that name. It seems to grow lovelier with time - she's almost thirty. We pronounce it Helen-na but she spends most of her time abroad in Spanish/French speaking countries where her name becomes Hel-lay-na or even El-lay-na. I like that I chose a name that travels well, even though it wasn't intentional!

MrsCaecilius · 07/04/2016 17:43

Helen-a

Known as Helly or Hels as nn.

Mslg · 07/04/2016 18:05

I'm Irish and I would pronounce it Heleena

Unicow · 07/04/2016 18:25

Helen-ay-na is my default.

dimdommilpot · 07/04/2016 22:24

I work with one and she always introduces herself as "Helen with an a on the end"
