My great, great grandfathers name but is it too 'old fashioned'? What do you think?

DP and I also like Marc, Matthew, Joseph and Caleb.

I like Matthew and Joseph.

AuntJane · 28/03/2016 23:43

I've known three or four Malcoms - and none of them has endeared me to the name.

How about Malachi as an alternative?

Seekingmiracles · 29/03/2016 07:59

Sorry but it's horrible. Use it as a middle name if you must but I can't for the life of me imagine an adorable baby named Malcolm!

weebarra · 29/03/2016 08:19

My dad is Malcolm and DS2 has it as a middle name. I like it - obviously!

YourBubzYourRulzHun · 29/03/2016 08:22

My friend has a 7yr old Malcolm, it really suits him. He gets called Malc.

ptumbi · 29/03/2016 08:26

I can't say Malcolm without it sounding like I have a blocked up nose.

Hate it.

ifgrandmahadawilly · 29/03/2016 08:28

Ugh, no. It's so ..... Grey sounding! Sounds like a creepy fifty years old man who still lives with his mum and goes trainspotting.

mydogeatsnutstoo · 29/03/2016 09:13

I have a young relative called Malcolm and it raised a few eyebrows when he was born but it really suits him now and has changed my view of the name away from the fifty year old trainspotter connotations. Mal is a cool nickname - I do like Malachi though.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 29/03/2016 20:13

We knew a Marholm a few years ago. He would be about 10 or 11 now.

Most disobedient kid in the sport class. Spent most of the lesson sitting on the side as he wouldn't listen.

And a creepy bloke. Kept asking me for a date, even though I only ever saw him with exdp and ds. Never went in that shop again!

But if you know better ones, then I don't see why not. It's along the same lines as Arthur and Frederick.

babymakesfive · 30/03/2016 06:11

In the same league as Trevor for me. Definitely not ready for a comeback!
I love Joseph, nn Joe.

ingenvillvetavardukoptdintroja · 30/03/2016 06:25

Awww it can work, I know an awesome Malcolm so makes me smile when I hear it. He's Scottish though so perhaps that's why it works

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/03/2016 10:41

The only Malcolm I ever knew well was tall, good looking and very successful. Yes, it may seem old fashioned now, but TBH so many of the names that are fashionable now were seriously crusty old men's names a generation ago - Alfie, Arthur, etc.

Not to mention the girls' names - when I was very young the likes of Poppy, Violet, Florence and Lily only belonged to wizened old great-aunts with whiskery chins.
If you like it, go for it - it will very likely be fashionable in another 5 years.

BushDiggle · 30/03/2016 16:22

I'm not a fan of Malcolm - sorry.

The only Malcolm's I know are old men!!!

smartyclogs · 30/03/2016 19:14

Sounds like his brothers would be Trevor and Barry.
Then again, I don't like Arthur, Albert, Mabel and Cybill but they've all made a comeback, haven't they.
If you like it, who cares.

AuntGertrude · 31/03/2016 19:15

Malcolm is fine - Malcolm in the Middle or Dr Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park!

But Malachi is a good alternative and Mal is a very good nn.

miniswin · 31/03/2016 21:08

If you're in Scotland no one will even bat an eyelid. I know several. Young and old. Don't know about elsewhere, but I would go for it.

n0ne · 16/04/2016 08:55

I used to think this was a boring dad name, but I've really warmed up to it in recent years compared to the horrors on the WTE baby name board

Malcolm seems strong, warm but manly

albertcampionscat · 16/04/2016 10:12

Love it.

SabineUndine · 16/04/2016 10:23

The only Malcolms I've known have been dreadful people, so no.

Sophronia · 16/04/2016 13:48

I like it. I know a (Scottish) one who goes by Malky. I prefer Matthew and Joseph though.

Honeyandfizz · 16/04/2016 13:51

NO!!! Just awful, don't do it!

MadameJosephine · 16/04/2016 13:52

Sorry i really don't like it.

I had an uncle called Malcolm who had a son with his first wife and named him Malcolm. He then divorced, remarried and had another son with his second wife and called him...........Malcolm Confused
