Spike. For a boy, obvs.

Is that too much?

Spike

I can't decide if this name is OTT or not
YellowOfficeBlock · 12/03/2016 19:43

Don't like it and certainly wouldn't use it as a "real" name.
Ok for a family nickname sort of thing perhaps

BeaufortBelle · 12/03/2016 19:46

Sorry OO, it's a nickname. I think it would be unkind.

Allalonenow · 12/03/2016 19:52

I'm not keen, it could be a fun NN for a kid with bushy hair, but I don't think it works as a grown up name.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 12/03/2016 19:56

majestic Grin

alltouchedout · 12/03/2016 19:56

I can't imagine an adult (well, a non vampire adult) called Spike.
Call him William with Spike as a nickname ;)

Jesabel · 12/03/2016 20:02

It doesn't have a Ye Olde vibe. It has a dog vibe.

TattieHowkerz · 12/03/2016 20:04

It's very try hard, aren't we cool and alternative, i.e. Not a name. Obviously I wouldn't say this to a parent of a Spike in real life, but I'd think it.

Tiggeryoubastard · 12/03/2016 20:05

It's the name of a bulldog. Not a child.

Panicmode1 · 12/03/2016 20:07

There was one in my son's year. Everyone kept asking what his "real name" was. It was his real name, not a nickname. Not a name I would ever have considered but each to their own!

MitzyLeFrouf · 12/03/2016 20:09

'I like it in an 'it sounds like a ye olde Victorian First World War' name kind of way.'

Confused

It sounds like the kind of name someone called Colin would re-name themselves when starting their Media Studies course. His best friends would be Hendrix (Trevor) and Buster (also formerly known as Colin).

Jesabel · 12/03/2016 20:13

I actually know someone (trendy try hard) who named their child Hendrix! Spike definitely belongs in the same style as Buzz, Buddy, Buster.

nooka · 12/03/2016 20:14

I think Spike is totally in the trendy try hard category and not at all 'ye olde'.

Possibly there are men nicknamed things like Spike in WWI fiction, in a Biggles 'we're all jolly chaps together' type way but it really isn't what comes to my mind.

villainousbroodmare · 12/03/2016 20:30

Great nickname.
Definitely not a given name. But can be a nn for anyone, need bear no relation to the name you choose for the birth cert.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 12/03/2016 20:32

Definitely not Stanley, Sidney type.

Have you considered Rupert?

NerrSnerr · 12/03/2016 20:32

I also thought of Buffy straight away. We have rewatched them all recently and really want Giles or Cordelia if we have a second child. My husband really needs persuading though...

It's better as a nickname.

Twinkie1 · 12/03/2016 20:39

I have an acquaintance who called her kid Spike.

She had a massive red princess wedding dress, huge fake boobs and a Range Rover on the never never as well as lots of fake designer shite.

Sums up the parent of a Spike IMO.

Haffdonga · 12/03/2016 20:39

I know one and like the name but think I'd still use a 'proper' name as his formal name and Spike as a nickname.

SillyBub · 12/03/2016 20:43

There's one in DS's class. It's just a normal name to me now and he is totally a 'Spike'. Only now thinking about it and saying it out loud does it sounds a bit out there but I think you should go for it. Smile

newyear16 · 12/03/2016 20:46

Surely it's a nickname?
It mames me rhink of a crewcut criminal banged up in the scrubs

WhiteBlueDaisies · 12/03/2016 20:46

There's just nothing nice about a 'spike' it's not a nice thing and therefore I don't like it as a name. Especially a 'real' name.

Also it's the kind of name that you have to live up to. So if he turns out to be quiet and timid he'll be teased about his name. Or I can imagine a teacher telling him off in the playground and asking his name. 'Spike? Oh, now it all makes sense'.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/03/2016 20:51

Yes I do think it's OTT, sorry, unless, of course you're expecting a baby dinosaur or Hedgehog.Grin

iminshock · 12/03/2016 20:53

It's horrible and neddy and oiky
