Setanta or Oisín?

Annarose2014 · 09/03/2016 10:17

I've always really liked the legend of Setanta and it's a name that can be pronounced by non - Irish people too. And it's a bit less common which I like.

BUT: the fucking TV station!

With Oisín, it's cute and I don't know anyone who dislikes it.

BUT: impossible to pronounce outside Ireland? Will it be a total pain as an adult?

Opinions please! Grin

This pronunciation sounds wrong to me! Would you agree Annarose?

Icompletelyunderstand · 09/03/2016 12:02

Lots of people know how to pronounce Oisin, it's not that unusual.

Setanta - seriously? No.

JanetOfTheApes · 09/03/2016 12:04

Mitzy, thats totally wrong, its never an Oh sound, its always Uh. The emphasis is slightly different in Munsters vs Leinster Irish, for example, but not much.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/03/2016 12:06

Glad it's not just me Janet!

I think there's a similar Welsh name (Osian?) that sounds quite like ocean but Oisín always start with an uh sound.

DramaAlpaca · 09/03/2016 12:12

I've often heard Oisín being pronounced exactly as in that link where I live (Munster), almost as often as the uh-sheen pronunciation. I've also heard it with a definite stress on the second syllable, so uh-SHEEN.

< lots of Oisín's in this part of the world >

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/03/2016 12:15

I'm going to hire a car and a loudspeaker and drive around Munster shouting 'YIZ ARE ALL WRONG. IT'S UH-SHEEN'.

JanetOfTheApes · 09/03/2016 12:19

I'll listen out for ye, Mitzy!

DramaAlpaca · 09/03/2016 12:22

Me too Grin

MagicPotion · 09/03/2016 12:24

Its a weird one, because I know that Oisin should be 'Uh-sheen'. I know.

But where my family are from (SE Ireland) - they all say Oh-sheen.
There is a definite lack of 'uh' sound.

Maybe its a minority dialect thing?

We have the same with Roisin. Rosh-een everywhere see, Ro-sheen where my family are.

And Saoirse. Seer-sha everywhere else. Sare-sha there.

Love Oisín!!!! My mum is Irish and I wanted it for one of my DSes, even though DH and I are obviously not Irish, but then friends named their son it and it was off the table.

It's not tricky compared to many Irish names.

Go for it!

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/03/2016 12:29

I might have to take my one woman tour via the South East too. If you see/hear me coming please chuck some sustenance my way.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/03/2016 12:31

Rosh-een everywhere see, Ro-sheen where my family are.

Oh I agree with Ro-sheen though so I won't yell about that one.

JanetOfTheApes · 09/03/2016 12:32

Pretty much always Roh-sheen, I would say? Rosh-een sounds very english to me.

SamanthaBrique · 09/03/2016 12:33

I'll have you know that one of my twins is called Setanta! (His brother is Eurosport...)

MagicPotion · 09/03/2016 12:39

Grin @ Mitzy

I'll get the Kimberley biscuits out for ye (well, actually, I won't, as I am a second generation-er based in London - but I'll tell my Dad to get the tay on).

I have an in-law from Derry who rages about the way my family say Sare-sha and Roe-sheen Grin

MagicPotion · 09/03/2016 12:39

Derry/Londonderry Grin

Annarose2014 · 09/03/2016 12:41

Poor old Setanta! Not getting much love!

Apart from the channel thing, is it really that bad?

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 09/03/2016 12:42

Setanta is Spanish for 70! No

Buttwing · 09/03/2016 12:42

I've not heard the name Oisin before but I guessed at the pronunciation being the same as the end of Roisin. I would pronounce Roisin as row-sheen but only because I live in a very Irish area (of England) and that's how I've heard it pronounced.

My family are from Italy and setanta means 70 which would be a strange name for a child.

Buttwing · 09/03/2016 12:43

X-post!

MagicPotion · 09/03/2016 12:46

I grew up in a very Irish area of London and I just think of dingy old pubs with big banners outside saying 'Setanta shown here'.

Sorry Grin

Havalina1 · 09/03/2016 14:27

Setanta is awful!! Wasn't he the dog?

Oisin is a fine name Smile

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/03/2016 14:41

No Setanta killed Culainn's dog (with his hurley maybe?) so he had to become 'Culainn's Hound' to make amends.

UsernamesAreAPainInTheBalls · 09/03/2016 14:42

That's a pity about Senan op I love that name Smile
Tbh if I loved a name I wouldn't let the TV channel thing put me off it's a lesser known sports channel it's not like your calling him bbc 2 Grin and obviously the channel is named after setanta from the legend because it's Irish so your hardly trying to name your baby after a made up word
If you like the name use it it's lovely in a couple of years setanta sports could be non existent and you'll be raging you didn't. plus kids will find a way to make a joke out of any name if they want
I should also say that my dd has a name that's regularly in threads on here entitled what name do you love but would never have the balls to use so feel free to ignore me 😂
