Setanta or Oisín?

I've always really liked the legend of Setanta and it's a name that can be pronounced by non - Irish people too. And it's a bit less common which I like.

BUT: the fucking TV station!

With Oisín, it's cute and I don't know anyone who dislikes it.

BUT: impossible to pronounce outside Ireland? Will it be a total pain as an adult?

Lots of people know how to pronounce Oisin, it's not that unusual.

Setanta - seriously? No.

Mitzy, thats totally wrong, its never an Oh sound, its always Uh. The emphasis is slightly different in Munsters vs Leinster Irish, for example, but not much.

I think there's a similar Welsh name (Osian?) that sounds quite like ocean but Oisín always start with an uh sound.

I've often heard Oisín being pronounced exactly as in that link where I live (Munster), almost as often as the uh-sheen pronunciation. I've also heard it with a definite stress on the second syllable, so uh-SHEEN.

Its a weird one, because I know that Oisin should be 'Uh-sheen'. I know.

But where my family are from (SE Ireland) - they all say Oh-sheen.
There is a definite lack of 'uh' sound.

Maybe its a minority dialect thing?

We have the same with Roisin. Rosh-een everywhere see, Ro-sheen where my family are.

And Saoirse. Seer-sha everywhere else. Sare-sha there.

Love Oisín!!!! My mum is Irish and I wanted it for one of my DSes, even though DH and I are obviously not Irish, but then friends named their son it and it was off the table.

It's not tricky compared to many Irish names.

Go for it!

Pretty much always Roh-sheen, I would say? Rosh-een sounds very english to me.

I've not heard the name Oisin before but I guessed at the pronunciation being the same as the end of Roisin. I would pronounce Roisin as row-sheen but only because I live in a very Irish area (of England) and that's how I've heard it pronounced.

My family are from Italy and setanta means 70 which would be a strange name for a child.

No Setanta killed Culainn's dog (with his hurley maybe?) so he had to become 'Culainn's Hound' to make amends.

Tbh if I loved a name I wouldn't let the TV channel thing put me off it's a lesser known sports channel it's not like your calling him bbc 2 Grin and obviously the channel is named after setanta from the legend because it's Irish so your hardly trying to name your baby after a made up word
If you like the name use it it's lovely in a couple of years setanta sports could be non existent and you'll be raging you didn't. plus kids will find a way to make a joke out of any name if they want
I should also say that my dd has a name that's regularly in threads on here entitled what name do you love but would never have the balls to use so feel free to ignore me 😂
