I currently have an Eleanor (Ellie) and a Noah and am expecting ds2 in six weeks time. I love the name Jonah, but my dh says it is too close to noah. What do you think? I suggested Jonathan with nn Jonah, but he is still not convinced. Ideas or suggestions please!

I like them my concern would be if I tried to call the three names together I'd get all tongue tied and it would come out as elenoanah 😁

Shake about Joel.

TheDetective · 09/03/2016 08:15

I think it sounds fine!

I have Ethan, Oscar and Jonah. 😍

Scarydinosaurs · 09/03/2016 08:22

If I was very religious I might, otherwise I would avoid using two such Old Testament names.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 09/03/2016 09:53

Yy scary still waiting for reply re religion... If not imho one biblical name is also fine Two? The bible is not just a book of trendy baby names 😞

OneMagnumisneverenough · 09/03/2016 09:53

Jonathan is fine in itself or with Jon or Jonny or Jono as a nn. I think it's too close in sound to the other names.

Other suggestions:

Christopher/Christian
Saul/Paul
Peter
Sylvester
Seth
Sebastian
Benedict
Gabriel

OneMagnumisneverenough · 09/03/2016 09:55

I wouldn't use religious names in general as I am an atheist, but at the end of the day it's a book with people in it, there is really no reason why you can't use the names if you aren't of faith.

I think it's fine. They will be brothers, not conjoined twins, and will have their own lives and identities. It's only on the baby/toddler years that you will say their names as a 'set' a lot. Great names.

TheDetective · 09/03/2016 10:57

Ethan and Jonah are biblical names. I'm an atheist. I don't see the issue.

It's a name. Smile

BarricadesBabe · 09/03/2016 11:09

I think Eleanor, Noah and Jonah are all beautiful names - sure, they all have same/similar final syllable but start so differently that they roll off the tongue rather than merge into one another.

We seem to have similar taste - Noah and Jonah were both on my boys' names shortlist (ended up with girls) and Eleanor was a very near miss!

AKissACuddleAndACheekyFinger · 09/03/2016 18:26

We are not religious and have five children, all with biblical names....don't see the issue.

PuppyMonkey · 09/03/2016 18:45

No, the water thing. I wouldn't .

Blu · 09/03/2016 19:18

They are both in the Old Testsment and Sea category. Too much.

RockUnit · 09/03/2016 19:20

I think they're too similar. How about James, Jacob, Joshua, John, Julian, Max, Arthur, Oliver, Lucas, Thomas?

Pippafisher · 09/03/2016 21:05

We are christians, but that is not really the reason for the name choices. Eleanor is our eldest and we just loved the name, in fact we decided on it on our second date many years ago! Noah was one option for ds1 but Cameron our other choice seemed too grown up when he suddenly appeared after a very fast 3 hour labour so we opted for noah, which was not quite so popular then and felt a bit risqué for us, hence we gave him George, a very traditional middle name just in case! Ds2 is a later, but pleasant surprise and having struggled last time for a name,I guess I love Jonah because it is so similar to Noah, nut my dh is far from sure. His family come from Edinburgh so we are considering a Scottish name, eg angus but are really struggling to agree. Thank you all for all your comments, it has given me lots to think about Smile

Yoni?

Brian, is that you?

OneMagnumisneverenough · 09/03/2016 21:37

Angus is maybe a bit Highland for an Edinburgh man.

I think you need something more lowland Scottish :)

Struan
Innes
Keir
Douglas
Merrick
Alexander
Alastair
Calvin
Findlay
Blair
Brodie
Jamie
Rory
Gregor
Andrew
Bruce

OneMagnumisneverenough · 09/03/2016 21:40

The most common surname in Edinburgh is Robertson iirc. so Robert or Robbie would also be fitting, though Struan is traditionally a really popular boys name in the Robertson clan.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 10/03/2016 00:34

Your choice of name sits well with me now Smile

TheDetective · 10/03/2016 00:42

As a mummy of a Jonah, I can assure you I've had no negative responses when I announce his name to people.

Quite a few proclamations of love for it!

He's Jonah James. Smile

Blu · 10/03/2016 08:05

Jonah is a great name.
Just OTT alongside Noah.
Ark / Whale......

But not everyone thinks like this and a new generation probably won't even know about Jonah.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 10/03/2016 08:30

and a new generation probably won't even know about Jonah
Sad

mydogeatsnutstoo · 10/03/2016 08:42

I think it is fine, they are similar but not ridiculously so and both nice names, especially like Jonah.
I don't see the problem with biblical names - I am not religious but I love OT names and being from a 'Christian ' background still seem culturally appropriate to me. Both my ds have biblical names - I just see the bible as a rich source of lovely names, as others have said.

SpidersFromMars · 10/03/2016 09:14

Asher or Josiah could be nice. Or Judah?
I think Jonah is too close.

crabb · 10/03/2016 09:22

Love both names but they sound too similar - the 'oh' sound. And the 'n' - when you're yelling calling out one of the names, either the wrong one or both will come. (This comes from someone who unwittingly chose names for 2 of her 3 DC that contain the same central
sound as her own name. Mix ups reigned in the Crabb household).
