HELP PLEASE!!! Edgar or Gustave?

our baby was born this week-end and hasn't a name yet! Help please! We are a French family living in London so need a name which is good in both countries. We loved Hector but realised the bullying meaning only recently and that put us off.... What do you think of Edgar or Gustave? Brother is Oscar, is Edgar too similar? Thanks a lot!

Edgar is lovely Smile

LineyReborn · 29/02/2016 17:41

I love both. Also Edwin. If you're French, I would go for Gustave.

SanityClause · 29/02/2016 17:41

I don't think anyone would think of bullying if they heard the name Hector, to be honest.

Of your two other choices, I prefer Edgar.

Gustave might work better in France, though?

CurlsLDN · 29/02/2016 17:41

I like Edgar, I used to know one when I was a child, he was nicknamed egg, which I expect became ed as he grew older.

I wouldn't be sure how to pronounce gustave, though I do like nn gus

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 29/02/2016 17:41

Gustave

CurlsLDN · 29/02/2016 17:42

I don't understand the hector/bullying link though

almostthirty · 29/02/2016 17:45

Hector is incredibly popular where I live. I don't like Edgar personally but do like Edward, Edmund and Eddison.

TheScottishPlay · 29/02/2016 17:47

Think it must be as in
hectoring (heckling) at political rallies or speeches
Hector is a great name, nn Hec.

ChippyMinton · 29/02/2016 17:51

Hector or Edgar

DontKillMyVibe · 29/02/2016 18:05

I prefer Edgar and don't think it sounds similar to Oscar. I'd never associate bullying with the name Hector though if that's your first choice and the only thing putting you off.

DontKillMyVibe · 29/02/2016 18:06

Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy by the way! Smile

vitaminC · 29/02/2016 18:08

I'm also French/British and I like both these name choices, although I do think Edgard sounds very similar to Oscar in French.

What about Edmond ?

Gustave, with Gus as a nn.

IoraRua · 29/02/2016 21:21

Edgar by a mile.

barnet · 29/02/2016 21:36

As pp said, Oscar and Edgar sound similar in french. Gustave is good and original, although I wouldn't know whether it had an 'e' on the end in english. And Gus is good as a nickname.
Oscar and Edwin would match the best though...

AuntJane · 29/02/2016 22:59

Of the two you suggest, I prefer Edgar.

Have you considered Louis, Julien, Laurent, Jerome, which all work in both languages.

MissTurnstiles · 01/03/2016 02:02

What's the bullying link with Hector? It's a great name.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2016 05:28

To hector is a verb. 'To talk and behave towards someone in a loud and unpleasantly forceful way, especially in order to get them to act or think as you want'.

I think I would go with Gustave, though I love Edgar and Hector.

omri · 01/03/2016 05:51

Gustave is s super name- love it. Was my boy name but we ended up having a girl. Congratulations on your baby boy!

DropYourSword · 01/03/2016 06:20

I like Hector!

Veterinari · 01/03/2016 08:27

Yif you like Hector go with that - it's rarely used as a verb

kelda · 01/03/2016 08:32

Love Gustave (my dd's second name, after his great grandfather), also love August(us).

joyfulworld · 01/03/2016 12:24

Congratulations on your baby boy.

I love Gustave Smile

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/03/2016 12:43

I love Edgar.
