Ambrose

DH absolutely loves it - I really love it too but worried it's too way out.

We started calling the bump Ambrose to see if it would stick...and it definitely has far, far more than anything else. But I'm nervous - quite possibly the responsibility of naming a human being is contributing to this though!

Thoughts?

I love Ambrose!

YellowPirate · 04/08/2016 02:49

I like it, unfortunately DH doesn't. Along similar lines I think are Clement and Gabriel. X

scoobyloobyloo · 04/08/2016 02:58

It sounds wet.

Also he'd get ripped to shreds for it here in the westcountry.

Raines100 · 04/08/2016 17:13

Custard.
Emrys is lovely

Pipilangstrumpf · 04/08/2016 18:43

Ambrose is great! Also love Clement.

dontmakemedothis · 04/08/2016 19:05

I thought of custard. And I definitely thought it was a girl's name! I'm actually kind of shocked that it's not.

Raines100 · 04/08/2016 19:08

Because of that advert, Scooby ? "Ooo arrr! It's ambrosiarrrr..."

sycamore54321 · 05/08/2016 00:02

To me, it's an old man Irish name. Nothing wrong with it per se but I instantly picture a stern elderly Christian Brother or a country-gent businessman rather than a newborn.

ClockMakerSue · 05/08/2016 08:57

Dislike it for the reasons already mentioned but also really like Emrys.

CodewordRochambeau · 05/08/2016 11:06

I rather like it, but it conjures in my head an 18th century farmer in a smock, chewing on some grass and speaking with a thick West Country accent. Not sure where that comes from.

How about Amos, if that's not too Cold Comfort Farm?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 05/08/2016 11:12

It makes me think of some ancient jowly priest with crumbs down his vestments.

I don't like it.

TempsPerdu · 05/08/2016 14:20

Ambrose is a strange one - I love it on paper, but struggle to picture a real-life child/teenager with this name. It's quite a distinguished, serious, scholarly-sounding name that brings to mind an elderly medieval monk or fusty academic rather than a modern young person - but then that's probably just because not enough people are brave enough to use it, so it's a bit of a vicious circle really! Have the same problem with other names like Gustav and Cassian, both of which I love in theory.

If you love it, go for it, but be prepared to encounter some raised eyebrows! Personally I'd probably chicken out and use it as a mn instead.

Pinklily1 · 05/08/2016 18:06

I like it but never having hard it before I assumed it was for a girl.

Hagothehills · 05/08/2016 18:09

I love it. Though that might might be because it sounds like ambrosius who is a character from my favourite film

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/08/2016 18:29

The baby is probably born and registered by this point, but I like Ambrose and Ambrosia, both are on our lists. But realistically I would only use for a fantasy child who I would raise in the wilds of middle America back in the 1800s.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/08/2016 18:30

Also that gal off of Bakeoff has an Ambrose, kudos to her!

DerelictMyBalls · 05/08/2016 20:22

I love it, and would definitely have used it for DS had it not sounded daft with our surname.
