How do people feel about Hamish? Any obvious nn?

I really like it. For some unknown reason it's fairly common here in Australia. 'Hame' is the usual nn, but I don't think it really needs one.

thebiscuitindustry · 21/02/2016 17:06

I like it.

Sophronia · 21/02/2016 17:28

It's ok. I've heard Hamie / Hamey as a nn.

Eminybob · 21/02/2016 17:35

I love it. We are considering for (as yet not conceived) DC2 if it's a boy.

It's the Scottish version of James FYI.

Eminybob · 21/02/2016 17:36

Oh and I wouldn't shorten it. But then we don't shorten DS's name which has many common shortenings.

KatieT12 · 21/02/2016 17:39

If I'm being honest, I think it sounds foreign (obviously not a bad thing and probably just me!)

It's just, my friend used to talk about a 'Hamish' and when I met him, you couldn't really get anymore 'English' - it's an okay name, certainly not dreadful... She only ever referred to him with the full name Smile

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 21/02/2016 17:41

Love it. Also love Seumas.

HSMMaCM · 21/02/2016 18:45

Excellent name. It was on my list.

dementedma · 21/02/2016 18:47

I'm in Scotland so it sounds fine to me!

ILoveACornishPasty · 21/02/2016 18:50

Super name. I have a very good friend called Hamish, everyone calls him H (which was amusing though the Steps years...)

TheOptimisticPessimist · 21/02/2016 18:52

I know a Hamish that tends to get Mish as a nn, he's in his 20s

crapfatbanana · 21/02/2016 23:10

I have a Hamish so I think it's ace.

Eigg · 21/02/2016 23:13

Katie you do realise it's a Scottish name?

AwfulBeryl · 21/02/2016 23:17

Oh my goodness, I love it.

I really love it, what a cool name.

notagiraffe · 21/02/2016 23:20

I love it.

KatieT12 · 22/02/2016 00:10

Yes Eigg by 'foreign' I mean out of the U.K...

WalkingBlind · 22/02/2016 00:50

Wonderful, I had a family member with this name and they got Jim as a nn due to the English version being James Smile

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2016 00:52

Good name.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 22/02/2016 07:25

Err, Katie, Scotland is still part of the UK...

JolieColombe · 22/02/2016 08:01

There was a vote and everythingWink

KatieT12 · 22/02/2016 08:09

I know it is? Grin

I wasn't saying that it sounds Scottish... I don't think it does.

I think it sounds Egyption or something.

KatieT12 · 22/02/2016 08:09

*Egyptian

crapfatbanana · 22/02/2016 10:42

I get you, KatieT12My husband calls our Hamish 'Hamoosh' sometimes, and makes him sound vaguely Middle Eastern. Is that what you mean?

Dabchick88 - the only drawback to the name for me is that some members of my family who have strong regional accents and dialects, drop their aitches and call him Amish!

KatieT12 · 22/02/2016 11:43

Yes, that's what I mean Smile

It is nice though!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/02/2016 11:46

Love it.

'Moosh' is the only NN I've heard, which I'm not too keen on, but most of the Hamishes I know get the full name.
