Unusual Boy's Name?

Rabbiting0n · 17/02/2016 14:56

Really struggling for a boy's name. We don't like names which are too popular; ideally nothing in the top 100 on the ONS data. Our surname ends "son" so any boy's names with an "un" sound at the end - of which there are many nice ones - tend not to go with our surname. It rules out lots of potential names because even "ian", "an" and "en" endings to boy's names can have that "un" sound when you say them aloud.

We have a short-list, but DH and I can't agree and we're not 100% happy with any of them. So far, we've got:

Rafferty - This is our current favourite, because we like Raffey, Raffa, Rafe etc, but we're not so keen on the full name.
Rupert - I worry it's a bit effeminate and can't use Roo or Ru as a nickname as we have a pet called Roo.
Ludovic - We like Ludo but perhaps it's a bit... odd?
Zephyr - We both really loved this (and the nickname, Zeph) but have seen it slated online. What do you guys think?
Myles - We like this, but I know my brother really wants it for a boy, so I don't think we could have it.
Hamish - DH's family are Scottish, so I was tempted, but he hates it.
Felix - Again, it seems a little bit weak, perhaps? Just inside the top 100, it could continue to rise in popularity and become the new Jude (which we love, but can't have because we know so many people with sons called Jude, now).
Travis - I like it but I'm not mad for it. DH doesn't like it at all.
Archer - DH loves it. I'm not totally convinced, and my Dad's next door neighbour has a young son - who plays with my father a great deal - who is called "Archa". Might this be a bit weird?
Pascal - I quite like it. DH does not.
Rufus - DH is keen but it makes me think of dogs.
Crispin - I've always liked it, but don't like "Chris", which people would probably try to shorten it to.
Matteo - (After a family member called "Matthew). Not sure if it sounds too Italian?

We've gone through all of the ONS data, so we've looked at thousands of names, but just can't agree. Our daughter's name is relatively rare in the UK, without being "strange". Also worth saying that the baby will go to a slightly hippy (not posh) private school, where our daughter's friends have names like "Bart", "Basil" etc, so we probably have a little more scope than some parents in certain parts of the UK, simply because many of his future classmates may have slightly unusual names, too.

What do you guys think of the above? Do you have any better ideas? Thanks :-)

I'd go with Rafferty since you both love it. Put that on the birth certificate so he has the option, then use shortened version which you prefer. Job done, and your brother gets to keep Myles!

Really love Rafe and Hamish. I also think Rafe is a full name in its own right you do not need to use Rafferty, which has a different feel to it. We have a two year old Archer so obvs I am a big fan of that name tooSmile. A DS2 would be Rafe, Hamish, Magnus or Angus.

gruffallofriend · 22/02/2016 15:56

Some great names on this thread. I particularly love (although am slightly biased):

Quentin
Rafferty
Magnus

Personally I find Matteo very Italian sounding, not a bad thing but just be aware of it.

LittleBlueRidingBoot · 23/02/2016 14:33

Jeremiah
Ferdinand

Gummibearchen · 23/02/2016 14:38

I have similar tastes and love
Rafferty
Quentin
Felix
Myles
Caspar
Reuben
Good luck!

Gummibearchen · 25/02/2016 14:06

Dominic
Thaddeus
Cassius

Jw35 · 25/02/2016 14:58

Zephyr. You both love it, stuff what others think! I think it's cool. I also like Felix from your list but it's reasonably popular whereas zephyr isn't

julfin · 26/02/2016 01:20

Definitely Zephyr - great name and you both want it. I've loved this for years. Have never actually heard of it being used as a name (I first knew it as a Greek god or a westerly breeze). Will be fine at school. Do it! I'm quite jealous actually - DH wouldn't go for it.

eatpuddingdrinkwine · 26/02/2016 18:26

Lovely names especially Rafferty and Rupert .Also like Ralph and Piers .

hollyisalovelyname · 26/02/2016 19:41

If you used Zephyr or Rupert where I live, eyes would roll. Smile

MyBreadIsEggy · 26/02/2016 19:49

One of my favourite boys names is Bodhi, but DH absolutely hates it Sad
It's a Buddhist name that means "enlightened" Smile

Astrophe · 27/02/2016 12:21

Raphael, if you like the nicknames for Rafferty but not the name itself?

Astrophe · 27/02/2016 12:21

What about Raphael instead of Rafferty?

Astrophe · 27/02/2016 12:26

Sorry, I didn't think the first post worked!

LaurieLemons · 27/02/2016 12:29

I like Rudy Smile

Also like Archer, Rupert and Myles (prefer Miles though) from your list. In my head Felix = cat, Rufus = dog.

marshmallowpies · 27/02/2016 12:32

Raphael is definitely a good alternative to Rafferty. Or Gabriel is another good angelic name?

I really like Scottish boys names too, so I'd consider Dougal or Douglas alongside Hamish, but if he doesn't like Hamish perhaps he won't go for those either. I also like Duncan but it doesn't sound like that would go so well with your surname.

IndomitabIe · 27/02/2016 12:34

Love some of these names! Particularly Rufus & Felix (ignoring Laurie's issues!). Love Zephyr too. Grin

ThePug · 27/02/2016 16:17

I've just had a baby boy and his name is Ralph, which fits the same style as a lot of your list I think. We've had good reactions thus far!

Justanotherusername1 · 27/02/2016 17:40

I actually like Ludovic its pretty cool and unusual

TheDinnerWitch · 01/03/2016 06:53

This is my list of 'too' boys names, maybe you will like some of them:

Toby / Tobias
Elijah
Ezra
Silas
August
Oscar
Otto
Onner
Reuben
Rufus
Ralph / Ralf
Cain / Kane
Caspian
Casino
Sage
Sorrel
Magnus
Milo
Theo

TheDinnerWitch · 01/03/2016 06:57

And by 'too' I mean 'top'!

Ludo is a pretty cool name btw Smile

IDontBelongHere · 03/03/2016 05:48

I'm originally from the other side of the pond, so I don't yet have a great grasp of what would be considered "unusual" in the UK.
However, having said that, I feel that many of my American friends have chosen rather unique names for their DS's. Excluding any that end in a "en" sound, some would be:

Sevi
Bentley
Cove
Kirby
Xander
Emanuel (which isn't that unusual in itself but they call him Mani for short)
Benaiah
Blade
Tripp
Leif
Grey

IDontBelongHere · 03/03/2016 05:51

And I love Zephyr! I say go for it

SanityClause · 03/03/2016 06:17

If you like Zeph, but aren't sure of Zephyr, what about Zephaniah, which is a biblical name.

If you like Casper, perhaps you also might like Jasper?

Another name you might like is Jago.

I really like Felix, and wanted it for DS, who is 12, but I already had a DC with an x in their name, and one without, and it seemed wrong to give two DC "matchy" names, with the other one not.
