Would this be mean?

I have always loved the name William. I was convinced since the age of 10 that I would call my son William. However, I have married a man with the surname Wallace.
Would this just be too mean?
FREEDOM!!

No, I think that sounds brill!

FellOutOfBedTwice · 11/02/2016 12:45

I went to school in the 90s with a Tom Jones, Toni Hadley and James Dean so people do do it. But I'm not sure why. It must be pretty tiresome going through your whole life pre-emptively laughing at the inevitable "joke" you know is coming.

WileHallion · 11/02/2016 12:47

I think it's mean.

Millions of names to choose from, why choose the one boring name that when coupled with your surname will give your child nothing but annoying comments and jokes throughout their life?

socktastic · 11/02/2016 12:51

DH has vetoed it anyway. I don't think I could be so cruel. Although in saying that I did go to school with someone called Annette Curtain so at least it wouldn't be quite as mean as that.

I know a guy near me called Ken Dodd. As far as I know, he doesn't own a set of tickle sticks.

manicinsomniac · 12/02/2016 21:55

Not mean, exactly. Kids won't know who William Wallace is until they're 9 or 10 (unless you're in Scotland I guess). By which time they'll be used to the name as your son's name and just think 'oh, cool, same name.'

But I do think it would be a bit strange and silly.

A customer at my first job was called Albert Hall Shock He was very proud of his name.

Achoo123 · 13/02/2016 07:32

Who is William Wallace? Never heard of him??

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 13/02/2016 08:21

Named "after" William Wallace is cool.

Willy-wally as a nn... Not so cool!

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/02/2016 17:48

Really, Achoo?

Ellisander · 15/02/2016 19:38

As a Scot I think it would be ridiculous. Glad your husband has vetoed it Grin.

ShesGotLionsInHerHeart · 15/02/2016 19:40

As a Scot, I also vote ridiculous. Grin

SweetieDrops · 15/02/2016 22:13

How about Liam instead? Still has the William connection but not so braveheart-y?

SirChenjin · 15/02/2016 22:18

I'm Scottish - just don't Grin

Your DH is a very sensible bloke.

Xmasbaby11 · 15/02/2016 22:20

No the names sound awful together!

TwistInMySobriety · 16/02/2016 16:02

Double-barrel your surnames. Job done.

magpie17 · 16/02/2016 16:27

I know a William Wallace! He's in his 50s but I have known him for ages and nobody ever comments on his name. We are in Scotland too so obviously his parents knew what they were doing but it's not an issue for him, it's a nice name.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/02/2016 16:30

SO mean.
