Remedios for a daughter's first name – any thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MangosteenSoda · 08/02/2016 03:34

Other nice/workable Spanish names:

Noemi, (Maria del) Rosario - lots of nns to choose from here Rosa/Rosie/Charo, Beatriz.

I think Eugenia and Cayetana have more of that granny vibe you like without being as uncompromising as Remedios.

Leonor is v popular in Spain and Portugal now, but would be more unusual in the UK.

MangosteenSoda · 08/02/2016 03:38

Ooh, I've always liked Belén too, but would hate to hear it rhymed with Helen which would invariably happen.

Dilligufdarling · 08/02/2016 04:22

If I met a child with that name I'd assume that the parents had got pregnant to try and save their marriage and considered the child their "remedy".
No idea if that's true in your case OP but that would be what I'd think.
I don't like it at all - sorry.

tilder · 08/02/2016 07:21

My brother as a teenager would have added a 'd' to the end of Belen. I realise that different cultures have different names, but the ops choice is a little unusual to say the least.

Am not very familiar with name changes on mn by the typo bit sounds a little Hmm

Blimey, MN is a very enthusiastic place! I hope no one called Remedios finds this threat…I'm you're a Remedios reading this, at least two people love your name!

TheNewStatesman — "She will hate you for this, seriously." So glad I'm starting my pregnancy hearing that my child will hate me instead of having to wait till my own hormonal paranoia to kick in ;)

MangosteenSoda — Those are pretty, aren't they? Beatriz is another family name that's definitely on our tiny list.

Tilder — Totally agree with the problem Belen has on the English-speaking side! (And totally bewildered by the typo being emoticon worthy. The site assigned me a number in my name, I decided to change it to avoid being "Tsipka99"…and then I typed my own username wrong, so I fixed it immediately after. I can't figure out why it'd bothering people – is it not the done thing to fix?)

SoupDragon · 08/02/2016 07:36

Why did you ask for opinions?

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 08/02/2016 08:32

Tsipka, the reason people are commenting on the typo is that most of us have MN set up to highlight all posts on a thread by the OP (original poster).

Changing your name breaks this, so at a glance it looks as if you're a different poster & the OP hasn't been back.

ClashCityRocker · 08/02/2016 08:46

Too much offensive slang connected to it.

It would get shortened to remmy which is used as an insult. In terms of outdated medical usage, it's probably up there with calling your child spasticus

MissBattleaxe · 08/02/2016 09:13

Opinions on here are going to be similar to the opinions of people who hear your daughter's name as she goes through life. And you STILL want to do it?

TheNewStatesman · 08/02/2016 09:18

'"She will hate you for this, seriously." So glad I'm starting my pregnancy hearing that my child will hate me instead of having to wait till my own hormonal paranoia to kick in ;) '

Well--Okay, I am speaking figuratively. I doubt she will actually hate her own mother, for kids forgiveth much. But she will wonder why on earth you chose a name which virtually all English speakers will think is ugly and weird sounding.

The Baby Name forum here is super super frank. This does occasionally result in butthurt, but it also makes it a place that is actually useful for telling you what people really think about your name!

MangosteenSoda · 08/02/2016 09:21

I think part of the problem is that people read it with a long e as in remEdial, instead of a short e as in remEdy which is the Spanish way. Also the first syllable sounds nicer in Spanish, kind of lighter and with a bit of a roll to the r. Just doesn't transfer well to English.

Reminds me of the little Hungarian girl called Boglarka thread. Also not a name that works well in English.

OP, if you want a long, old fashioned, religious Spanish name, I give you... Fuensanta.

MangosteenSoda · 08/02/2016 09:23

But I think Beatriz is a lovely choice Smile

PitilessYank · 08/02/2016 09:44

I think that native English-speakers will slaughter the pronunciation of Remedios. You will get lots of Ree-mee-dios with a hard "r" and "d", which would ruin it for me.

MissBattleaxe · 08/02/2016 09:48

As a PP suggested, could you shorten it Reh-may/ Reme?

StitchesInTime · 08/02/2016 10:44

I think Beatriz would work much better in England than Remedios.

SoupDragon · 08/02/2016 11:13

Beatriz is far better.

HumbleCrumble · 08/02/2016 11:34

It sounds like a spell that Harry Potter would use to fix a mistake.

"Oh no, there's a typo in my username - remedios! There, all sorted."

Also I would assume it was a boy's name.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 08/02/2016 11:36

I thought remedial too.

Gracey79 · 08/02/2016 16:36

What about ramona?

Iwantakitchen · 08/02/2016 17:01

I also really like Romy, as in Romy Schnider the actress. It's a good name in France, and I am sure I've heard it in Holland. Not sure about Spanish though.

HeyNonnyMaybe · 08/02/2016 17:08

Is it Re-MEH-dee-oss or Re-meh-DEE-yos?

I met someone recently called Ixone, which I thought was rather nice, I think it might be Basque.

HeyNonnyMaybe · 08/02/2016 17:09

Ooh, this is finally a thread where people can actually, properly suggest Ramona! Grin Good work Gracey!

FourStarDragonBall · 08/02/2016 17:18

What about Remmi/Remmy/Remi?

tickory2 · 08/02/2016 17:25

Anyone got some remedios for my dicky tummy? That's what sprang to mind when I saw it. Sorry.
