Which do you prefer?

Asking on behalf of SIL who is pregnant with her first child, surname is Davies

Marnie.

Mali is a country.

WonderingAspie · 23/01/2016 22:14

Is Mali a name? Makes me think of Malia. It does sound made up.

I did like Marnie until I met someone who called her daughter that. The daughter is a spoiled madam and total pita and the mum is a bit chavtastic rough around the edges. I end up associating names with people so it has a negative association for me but the name in its self isn't bad. I think Marnie Davies goes quite well.

iciclewinter · 23/01/2016 22:15

Marnie. It's quite nicknamey-sounding so Marina with Marnie as nickname might be nice.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 23/01/2016 22:19

Mali is the Welsh version of Molly!!! Not at all made up!!! :-)

chuckieegg2008 · 23/01/2016 22:19

Mali is a welsh name

But they both sound like dogs' names to me... sorry

ThoughtfulPenny · 23/01/2016 22:23

Mali - I'm assuming she's in Wales. It's really pretty.

eternalopt · 23/01/2016 22:26

Love Mali, but then I'm in Wales! Could go Mari if she's not in Wales but wants a Welsh name. Might be easier for the English tongues and is a cords between the two.

DontKillMyVibe · 23/01/2016 22:27

Marni. Think Mali could grow on me though

Jeffjefftyjeff · 23/01/2016 22:33

Mali means gardener in Hindi. Not sure if this makes a difference to you! I like it but if you're not in Wales/ have non Welsh friends people would pronounce it like the country ( mar-li not ma-lly)

LeaLeander · 23/01/2016 22:39

Marnie sounds nicknamey and also makes me think of the Hitchcock film about the neurotic thief whose mother was a prostitute and who was raped by her husband.

Mali is somewhat better but again sounds like a nickname.

LovelyBranches · 23/01/2016 22:59

Are you pronouncing Mali to rhyme with Sally? I'm Welsh and I like it.

TheRealBarenziah · 23/01/2016 23:32

Marnie is a bad choice in some regional accents - up here in the north west, names are often prefaced with "our", so it's not uncommon to hear cries of "Armani!" in the supermarket Wink Asda rather than Waitrose, obvs

slkk · 23/01/2016 23:39

Marnie means lady bits here.

Abominablebride · 23/01/2016 23:42

I know a Mali (rhyming with Harley) she is named after the country

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 23/01/2016 23:46

Marnie.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 24/01/2016 00:01

Mali. Pronounced mall-e. like Sally.

Welsh name, so goes well will Davies.

Marnie is cute, but all I can hear is a Whiney American kid shouting 'marrrrmeeeee' for its mum.

Short for imani? As a nn?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/01/2016 00:03

Marnie. Gorgeous name.

Sophronia · 24/01/2016 00:19

Marnie

Cococo1 · 24/01/2016 07:51

They are both nice. Think I prefer Marnie - and love the idea of Marina nn Marnie.

LeonoraFlorence · 24/01/2016 20:46

Definitely prefer Marnie :)

LadyFannyOfOmaha · 24/01/2016 20:55

Like others have said Mali (Welsh Molly) goes nicely with Davies. I don't like Marnie, it sounds like sarnie, a horrible word, or a cross between mardy & moany, just a dreadful name.

CrystalMcPistol · 24/01/2016 22:03

I really like Marnie.
