Finlay? Is it too common now?

Finlay is in our top 5 boys names but worried it is quite popular and will sound dated quickly (not like a classic name).
Thoughts please?!

It's lovely. I know a few. If you are concerned about popularity what about just Finn or Flynn x

PooDogMillionaire · 21/01/2016 22:11

Fintan?

PooDogMillionaire · 21/01/2016 22:12

Sorry that was meant to read yes it's very popular (because it's so lovely) but how about Fintan? Smile

Raines100 · 22/01/2016 07:49

Isn't Fintan the name of the dog that chased that herd of deer? 'Oh, Jesus Christ...' Grin

ophiotaurus · 22/01/2016 07:52

No that's Fenton!

dementedma · 22/01/2016 08:01

It's popular here in Scotland but I think it always has been and always will be. I know Findlays here from old men to babies.

Luckystar1 · 22/01/2016 08:06

Fintan is an Irish name. Nice, not very popular even in Ireland. But, all such names seem to get shortened to Finn (which I have always loved, but it's just too popular for me personally now).

I actually only know 1 Finlay and that's a friend of a friend's son.

Lucymatilde · 22/01/2016 08:10

Used to be a chain of tobacconists when I was a girl.

Ilovegummibaers · 22/01/2016 10:52

Yes, Finn/Fin/Finlay/Finley has been very popular and we know quite a few aged 3-11.

Oxtailchambermaid · 22/01/2016 12:27

In our office of about 25 people, 3 have a son called Finlay.

BlueChampagne · 22/01/2016 12:54

I know at least 3 Finns between the ages of 5 and 8. Would you consider Phineas?

YellowSquirrel · 22/01/2016 13:08

Is it Finlay with a d in Scotland then? Finlay or Finlay?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 22/01/2016 17:47

I think it's gone past its peak now.

About 5-6 yrs ago you couldn't move for Finlay/Finleys.

It's nice enough, but there are a lot.

IoraRua · 22/01/2016 17:49

Finan is a possible option? It's an Irish name. Finn-awn is pronunciation.

midsomermurderess · 22/01/2016 18:33

I prefer Findlay as a spelling. I think it's a well-established name, in Scotland anyway, not faddy nor, so far as I am aware, overly popular. I like it.

ShmooBooMoo · 22/01/2016 18:40

Chipping in with Finbar...

cecilelliott · 22/01/2016 19:38

Yes, it is popular but, as others have said, may have reached its peak.

What about:

Felix
Ferdy (Ferdinand)
Fergus
Phelim (lovely Irish name)

dotdotdotmustdash · 22/01/2016 19:45

I know a Finan too, it's a cool name and much less common that Finlay.

dementedma · 22/01/2016 20:07

Phelim sounds like phlegm

museumum · 22/01/2016 20:09

Findlay has always been around in Scotland. With or without the d. It's classic.

I know a Thorfin known as Fin.
