What do you think of Nora? I love it but do you immediately think "old lady with wrinkled tights"?

MazzleDazzle · 21/01/2016 21:20

I love it!

Sadly, it doesn't go with my surname.

iciclewinter · 21/01/2016 21:28

I don't like it, sorry.

WhimsicalWinnifred · 21/01/2016 21:40

Every name has negative connotations. No child of this generation will be called Nora batty!

Artandco · 21/01/2016 21:49

I'm 30. I have no idea who Nora Batty is and never heard anyway say Nitty Nora

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2016 22:06

Awful, sorry.

To me it's in the same style as Gladys, Doris and Edna, but it seems to be popular on MN.

BeaufortBelle · 21/01/2016 22:10

Nora Batty was the rather indomitable elderly lady of a certain age in Last of The Summer Wine whose thick lisle stockings were always falling down. Mid 80s I guess. You must have heard your mum and dad mention Nora Batty.

Mums in the playground used to refer to nitty Nora - looking back (my mum did too).

Ham69 · 21/01/2016 22:55

No one says Nitty Nora or Nora Batty these days. Definitely not something worth worrying about!

Artandco · 22/01/2016 07:00

Nope never heard either parents mention it. Mind you we never had a television even so they have probably never seen that show either

If some had head lice it was just ' x has nits', no Nora mentioned

margaritasbythesea · 22/01/2016 07:05

I liked it. Everyone else hated it. I'm glad I didn't use it.

mollie123 · 22/01/2016 07:16

I had an aunt (many many years ago) who was called Gwenora (Welsh for Guinevere (sp.)) who was always known as Nora. If there is any welsh connection in your family.

JustPretending · 22/01/2016 07:20

Beautiful name. Love it. No more old-lady-ish than names like Lily, Martha, Florence etc.

SevenOfNineTrue · 22/01/2016 07:22

I think Nora Batty or Flamin' Nora.

Honeyava · 22/01/2016 07:24

Nora is a good name. you can attach good thoughts with Nora instead of "wrinkled tights".

pilates · 22/01/2016 09:38

Dreadful, ugly name. Sorry.

Madbengalmum · 23/01/2016 14:54

I like!

BettyBi0 · 23/01/2016 15:19

I'd go for Eleanora instead of straight Nora. I know someone with this name and she was called Nora as a child and then decided to just use Elea when she went to secondary school as she bought it was nicer

Artandco · 23/01/2016 15:20

Leonora is nice also

midsomermurderess · 23/01/2016 16:13

I love it too. What's with the 'special snowflake' dig?

Ohtobeskiing · 23/01/2016 16:23

My dd's middle name is Norah. She is 17 and is a bit 'meh' about it. It was dh's choice as it was the name of his much loved Irish great aunt - have to say I wasn't massively keen to start with but I think it suits dd and think it fits well with her other names. It has definitely grown on me.

NameAgeLocation · 23/01/2016 16:25

Very popular in the Netherlands with nicknames Noor and Noortje.

AlmaMartyr · 23/01/2016 16:31

I know a couple of babies called Nora. I like it, Nora Batty is a disappearing reference and have never heard of Nitty Nora (am 32). I think it might become quite popular, a bit like Martha.

TwistInMySobriety · 23/01/2016 19:03

Awful.

nooka · 23/01/2016 20:54

I don't like is as a stand alone name, but love some of the longer names it can be used as a diminutive of. Especially Eleanor.

Also Bloody Nora

TheRealBarenziah · 23/01/2016 23:42

Love Norah with the "h". Dora and Cora are alternatives too.

SouthernShepherdess · 25/01/2016 02:06

It's very "old lady". My 80 something year old auntie is "Norah". I guess it's a name you can warm to. Just very under used these days.
