What do you think of Joni?

I am 38 weeks with DD2 and suddenly having doubts about the name we had picked.
We were pretty set on Edith / Edie, but I am now not sure. I love Edie but am not as keen on Edith. Also my DD1 is called Mabel so it would be two 'old lady' names, and I worry about it sounding quite 'amusing' when we introduce them!
So last night my DP suggested Joni (inspired by Joni Mitchell). I think it's quite a cool name and there are unlikely to be others in her class at school, but my worry is that she would have a life of people asking what it is short for, and possibly even pronouncing it 'Johnny'!
Thoughts?

Joni is a gorgeous name. I much prefer it to Edith/Edie, particularly with a sibling Mabel :)

Love "Joni Mitchell". Nickname as Joni is a good taste.

How unusual to get a full house of thumbs up! It's a winner! I love all of your choices, OP.

Thanks Sugar!

everyone will call it johnny

South that's unlikely according to this thread.

And anyway, two consonants would be needed for the 'o' to have a short sound, so the grammar police won't allow 'Joni' to be 'Johnny'. I love grammar

I see yoni, sorry 😖

Honeyava · 25/01/2016 04:59

Hi Johnny. That's right.. Smile

Love Joni! Do it! I know a mum called Joni and she's amazing.

OhShutUpThomas · 25/01/2016 07:53

Love it.

But it does make me think of Brian from Hull.

HippyPottyMouth · 25/01/2016 07:55

I'd read it as Jonny, because I read a book about a girl who pronounced it that way long before I'd heard of Joni Mitchell. Still a lovely name, but there is room for confusion.

I work with a Joni who was also named after Joni Mitchell. I think its lovely and she likes it herself but did say her whole life she has to correct people from hearing it as "Jodie"

Woodenmouse · 25/01/2016 12:53

I love it!! Go for it

yankeecandle4 · 25/01/2016 12:57

I was at school with a Joni (after JM) Sub teachers always called her Jonny and anytime she was asked her name people would write Joanie.

i love Mabel and Edie.

We've had second thoughts about Joni. Mainly because when we've mentioned it to people in the last few days we automatically say 'as in Joni Mitchell', which is bound to get annoying. So for now we're back to Edie (but registered as Edie, not Edith). Thanks for all the comments.
