My friend is being told the name she picked is too 'white'.

My best friend is originally from Africa. She's pregnant and wants to call her little girl Lilly.....she has had the snide remark however, that it is too much of a 'white' name. So she wouldn't 'suit' it!

So my question is do 'you' believe that names have a place regarding the colour of skin or culture of a person? I think you should be free to call your baby whatever. I once knew a Matteo (sorry if the spellings wrong) and he was in no sense Italian!

I've never heard of something so silly and horrible!

TheMouse,
You can't beat a bar of milk chocolate. yum.

hollowlegs · 18/01/2016 18:58

There is no such thing as reverse racism

Bullshit.
Try telling that to the people who have been on the receiving end of it.

IfItsGoodEnough4ShirleyBassey · 18/01/2016 18:59

Oh god don't start praising Cadburys chocolate - then it really will kick off.

Vixxfacee · 18/01/2016 18:59

You can be discrimated against but racism no.

LagoonaBlu · 18/01/2016 19:02

There's plenty of information available on google, if you don't like that link

hollowlegs · 18/01/2016 19:06

If you believe there is no such thing as racism against white people then go ahead, believe it.
I happen not believe it.

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/01/2016 19:19

" She's pregnant and wants to call her little girl Lilly"
That's all that matters. Other people's opinions are irrelevant.

IfItsGoodEnough4ShirleyBassey · 18/01/2016 19:31

Well that's the Baby Names topic gone for a Burton then WhereYouLeftIt Grin

MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 19:32

The people who say that racism toward white people doesn't exist are part of the problem. Let's call them enablers for arguments sake. Politically correct fucking morons

TheMouseThatRoared · 18/01/2016 19:39

The op isn't being racist though, so I'm not sure why the thread should be zapped?😖

Lily is used by all sorts of muslims too its persians arabs indopaks caucasians. Im south asian lily is quite common amongst us i nevrr thght it was just a white nane. Did they mean white or christian? Why say white?

I know iwould prefer a muslim name for my kids because names are very important in .y gaith. We should be recognised as muslim by ournanes nit be ashamed in keeping abrahamic names just to fit in. More important its meant tohave a good meaning and jot refer to idolatory or have negative meanings or connotations.

Having said that technically any name can be kept as long as it has a good meaning they dont have to islamic one or hebrew/ pre islamic ones.

Generally though i can understand why ppl keepnamws relevant to their culture its more the norm helps ppl fit in? Having a name that is strange to that community can lead to bullying right shoukdnt that he considered too not just the parebts right to name but the childs right too? For exsmple i would be happy to nsme my son danyal, christians would say daniel arabs danyaal. but i dobt know sny christians who wiuld bane their child khadija or son muhammad i bet theyd be dead against it in this country.christoans in the arab world however wouldbt see the big deal.

But in my ethnic culture its quite the norm to hear arab names hindu names and western soundinv names. I.e typical salma, rumi, priya, johnny ronny (they dolike rhyming kids names lol, ruby, rosy, sarah, holly, molly, polly (no joke ihave cousins named such loletc. So after all thattome its not tooweird OP lol

I have just read back this thread and I just want to get things straight that I am simply posting on behalf of a friend who told me exactly what was said. I even SAID that I believed the way her family where behaving was horrible!

I asked if a NAME CAN BE STEREOTYPICALLY associated with a person of the basis of their skin, culture etc.

She only wanted to know as the comments made by her family really REALLY upset her. She start to doubt herself as to whether these comments may be true. So I created a thread to see other peoples views.

It's very clear what you posted, OP, some people just can't read and are being dimwits. Ignore them.

Katarzyna79 · 18/01/2016 20:18

Put it simply op, shouldnt matter but it can be specific to certain cultures and faiths jusr like dress i suppose.

some names are more universal than others so can easily be used . Id be more concerned as to whether the child would be bullied in theircommunitydue to the name being alien to their culture?

SoWhite · 18/01/2016 20:38

Lily makes me think of native Americans, like Tiger Lily, not white people!

I do kind of get where the family are coming from, but tough shit really - it's not their baby.

Makemineacabsauv · 18/01/2016 20:39

There's a lovely wee black girl called Lily in a class near mine in school and she absolutely suits her name!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 18/01/2016 20:54

Am wondering about the name Jade. Maybe only Martians should use it. Grin

originalmavis · 18/01/2016 20:56

The only Jades I've ever met have been Chinese and like it as a name. I've met a couple of Individuals...

janethegirl2 · 18/01/2016 21:21

Perhaps spell it as Leleith, nn Lilly

MummyZELC · 18/01/2016 23:19

I know several Jades. All white European. Names are universal

www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/01/spike-lee-white-oscars-160119040258859.html

Spike Lee to boycott Oscars because they are 'lily white'

MamaLazarou · 19/01/2016 13:21

Lily is a perfectly lovely name for girls of any colour.

White kids called Ebony, though... Hmm

Stillunexpected · 19/01/2016 13:28

I have no particular feelings either way about using the name Lily for an African baby but have just heard a news item about Spike Lee describing the Oscars shortlist as "lily-white" because there is not a single black actor nominated. So there you have a black director obviously associating the word with whiteness.

morningmistermagpie · 19/01/2016 13:39

I know a black Edelweiss too, I've never thought anything of it.

My son has a Scandinavian name but we're not remotely Scandinavian! Nobody has ever commented.
