Remy - for a girl?

cornwallsharon · 16/01/2016 19:23

So my husband keeps coming back to Remy but for a girl.

I'm not convinced - I worry it's a bit chavvy and also using a boy's name for a girl.

Unusual and pretty or weird and silly?

I wouldn't consider it a boys name at all, but because the only one I've heard of is off House!

SisterMoonshine · 16/01/2016 21:56

There's no way I could.
But maybe remmy as a slang word was a regional thing when I was at school And that's why it doesn't seem to be a problem for many people.

ClashCityRocker · 16/01/2016 23:29

Was wondering that too sistermoonshine. I'm in North yorkshire and its sadly still alive and kicking up here.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/01/2016 23:31

I think of the premier league strikers, and then the male rat.

I wouldn't, for a non French girl.

SisterMoonshine · 17/01/2016 10:46

I'm in the South East, so it must have been quite widely used then.
I don't hear it used anymore though, it went out of use around the same time as 'retard'.

KoalaDownUnder · 17/01/2016 15:14

I like Romy or Romilly for a girl, but Remy is for boys.

I'd at least spell it Remi, to distinguish it from the male name (like Tony/Toni).

Vixxfacee · 17/01/2016 15:15

Love Remy. It was my dogs name.

LongWayRound · 17/01/2016 15:51

I've just had a look on a French website and it gives Rémy as a girl's name as well as a boy's (though much commoner for boys than girls).

florascotianew · 17/01/2016 16:27

Interesting link, Long Way. It says that the name Remy (sorry, can't do accents on this machine) has been given to 73,196 boys in France since 1946, and to 69 girls (ie just one girl per year, on average).

Statistically speaking, to answer OP's question, and using her words, that does make Remy for a girl very 'unusual' and IMHO rather 'weird'. Apart from family/sentimental reasons, I simply don't understand why people would want to give boys' names to girls. But each to their own. Your baby, your choice.

bristollady · 06/02/2016 12:06

Remy is of French origin and traditionally used for boys. I really like it! Here's where it comes from:

French form of the Latin name Remigius, which was derived from Latin remigis "oarsman".

Also, have you watched House of Cards? There's a guy on there called Remy Denton who is quite hot, but I digress.

While it is supposed to be a boys' name, who says you can't use it for a girl? People have used James for girls, so why not Remy?!

IoraRua · 06/02/2016 12:08

I hate Remy, Romy and Romilly. Sorry OP.

PooDogMillionaire · 06/02/2016 12:12

I think it's a bit nick namey and sounds like a boys name.
