Baby boy name, difficult criteria!

I am hugely fussy about names. This is probably because I am a secondary school teacher and therefore there are a lot of names that remind me of difficult kids. Silly perhaps, but most teachers are the same! I really like 'normal' names like James/George/Thomas etc, and actually in teaching there are so many of these names that they all kind of merge into one and I don't worry too much about whether some of the ones I've taught have been difficult to like! However, the problem is that I have a huge family. Pretty much every name I like is already the name of a brother, cousin, or cousin's child. So ruled out are:

James, George, Tom, Sam, Jack, Nicholas, William, Oliver, Edward.

Because of the teaching problem, I also don't like names that have started to become more 'trendy' in the last few years. So Archie/Alfie/Dylan etc etc.

Finally, I like names that pass the high court judge test but can also be shortened easily.

Our surname means nothing beginning with H. Our daughters name means nothing beginning with B.

Told you I was difficult!

I have a daughter, Beatrice, and it was pretty much the only name we could find that fitted our criteria. I've never taught one, it's still a 'known' name, and can be shortened.

I have ONE name that I like for our boy, due any day now. That name is Douglas. But is that one of those names you should only use if you're of Scottish heritage? Because we're not... And is it a bit too 'out there' for a baby? I think I'm blinded by how much I love the name and worry a bit that it's like calling a baby Gary?

Help!

If you continue teaching, then Sod's law will mean that the most nightmare pupil you ever have will appear as soon as you return from maternity leave, and will have the same name as your DS!

A number of names that I'd suggest have already been mentioned.

Another tack to try is names which are unfashionable at present, but perfectly good names:

Neil, Simon, Paul, Nigel, Kenneth, Edmond, Rupert, Ian, Geoffrey?

RalphSteadmansEye · 13/01/2016 08:19

Stick with Douglas.

It goes fabulously with Beatrice. It's strong and a proper name and it's not odd to use as a non-Scot.

I know two English ones under 5.

I was also going to say my dh thinks my shortlist should be longer buy I don't think there's anything wrong with sticking with what you like. I like Dougie too and think it would go well with dd.

Also think we're guilty of overthinking things because we had strict criteria with dd too and feel like we got it right there so we're now trying to use the same criteria so they match. Incidentally the names I mentioned before I'd been thinking about since we were naming dd and my top two didn't change in that time. So I think if you are set on something go for it. Especially if you agree.

My dh has suggested Jeremy, Simon and Nathan but they're all a bit wet I think.

Good luck op!

I like Douglas Doug etc

BlueChampagne · 13/01/2016 13:46

Conrad?

Ilovegummibears · 13/01/2016 14:23

Douglas is a great name. I also like Dominic, Quentin and Alastair.

Junosmum · 13/01/2016 14:23

Rufus

CakeRattleandRoll · 13/01/2016 14:55

I agree that Douglas is great, and not a problem if you have no Scottish connections. I would put it in the same category as Dylan, and there are loads of Dylans without any Welsh heritage.

Or how about:
Angus
Anthony
Samuel
Louis
John

mydogeatsnutstoo · 13/01/2016 15:29

I like Douglas, if that is the name you love just use that!

What about Rufus? Similar style, though maybe not as easy to shorten.

zippyswife · 13/01/2016 16:50

Hugh (I have a Hugh so biased here)
Michael
Dominic

I like Douglas I also like Hamish but I think you really need to be a Scot to have Hamish so is ruled out for me. Good luck.

SSargassoSea · 13/01/2016 16:56

Luke
Callum

Not particularly shortenable - but then I don't really get why all names must have nicknames - why?

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 13/01/2016 16:59

I liked the name Douglas when pregnant with ds. We eventually chose Isaac

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/01/2016 16:59

Douglas/Doug is great!
Use that!

I have a baby due in a few weeks and we only have one name for each sex. It's really hard!

Whatsinaname2011 · 13/01/2016 17:00

Stick with Douglas.

GerrysSuccessor · 13/01/2016 18:53

Thank you all for the suggestions, but thank you even more for making me feel good about Douglas! Few much happier going for it now it has passed the Mumsnet test (the baby name board can be a bit brutal, I was scared to ask for ages in case I got laughed out of here!)

As to nicknames. I don't know why we have to have them, but we do. In my family we shorten (or lengthen, or turn into something ridiculous) every name going. My parents have always done it and so do I. Just one of those things I guess, each to their own. And as it's going to happen anyway I want to give a better chance of a nickname being something I like!

Douglas is great.

How about:
Declan
Patrick
Hector
Gregor
Duncan

AliAliAlium · 13/01/2016 20:29

Douglas is great (I am Scottish so can't really judge how it would be received in England, but I love it).

Fraser?
Adam?
Miles?

I love Laurence nn Laurie too.

StDogolphin · 13/01/2016 20:46

Cedric
Alban

Meeep · 13/01/2016 20:49

Douglas is fine, use that - you love it!

It's the one.

FunkyPeacock · 13/01/2016 20:53

I like Douglas

Other names that might fit your criteria
Patrick
Robert
Lawrence
Jacob
Stephen

JacquelineChan · 13/01/2016 21:01

Nicholas! I love it. Just finished a great book where this was the lead character. ...is it old fashioned?

Not too keen on Nick but quite like Nicky as nn

acemay · 13/01/2016 21:13

Another vote for Douglas!
