Albus

Would it be wrong to name my son Albus? I can't decide if it is too odd to name a child after an mad elderly fictional wizard. I liked the Harry Potter books and just like the sound of the name. We would probably call him Albie for short. What do you think?

I would think the Dumbledore link is just too strong. It's a nice enough name but I would feel a bit sorry for the kid. But you know, in 10, 15 years it may just be fine.

Probably not the most helpful comment, but I saw this in active threads and wondered why you wanted to name a child AIBUs! Haven't read Harry Potter, so can't add anything helpful about that either, but it does sound like a cute retro name.

MummySparkle · 07/01/2016 19:32

I think it's okay. We met and Albie at toddler group - was very sweet

mercifulTehlu · 07/01/2016 19:33

Awesome! Yes, do it! Albus Severus perhaps...

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 07/01/2016 19:33

Just dumbledore, sorry! Can you use albie instead of Albert?

Roobix04 · 07/01/2016 19:33

Love it. He'd be named after one of Hogwarts greatest headmaster's. Different is good. Disclaimer* I have a deathly hallows tattoo on my wrist and am wearing Harry Potter pj's.

Stollenlover · 08/01/2016 15:21

Love Albus - cool, classic and not overused. By the time he goes to school, the Harry Potter books won't be that 'currrent' anymore.

Stollenlover · 08/01/2016 15:22

However, I'm less less keen on Albie/Alfie/Archie type names, think they will soon sound very dated.

LittleFishBigOcean · 08/01/2016 15:22

The first thing I thought was oil.......

I do like Albie though.

AuntieStella · 08/01/2016 15:25

I've known two Albies in RL and both were short for Albert (one is around 70 now, the other KS1)

Albus just wasn't around before HP, and yes it will scream Dumbledore. Only you can decide if that's liveable with for your DS.

Stollenlover · 08/01/2016 15:29

Actually Albus is an old Roman name, derived from Albinus and means light, white.

Provencalroseparadox · 08/01/2016 15:34

I really like it. And the nn too

SweetieDrops · 08/01/2016 16:06

I wouldn't. Albus Dumbledore was a dick.

xmasseason · 08/01/2016 16:12

I like the sound of Albus, but if you're not sure about the Dumbledore link, how about Alban with nickname Albie?

vestandknickers · 08/01/2016 16:15

Sorry, too Dumbledore!

Roobix04 · 08/01/2016 22:47

Nobody ever says Atticus is too Finch or that Alice is too Wonderland. You're allowed to name kids after modern books as well as "classics"

TenTinyTadpoles · 08/01/2016 22:48

No, I read it as Aibu !

Shallishanti · 08/01/2016 22:51

actually I think Atticus IS too Finch

Needaninsight · 08/01/2016 22:52

Oil?

Er. no.

thegiddylimit · 08/01/2016 22:56

Roobix or Wendy is too Peter Pan or Fiona is too Ossian or Lorna too Doone.

Actually if you have a DD then Fiona has the same meaning as Albus!

xmasseason · 08/01/2016 22:59

Atticus is too attic-y

Mrsw28 · 08/01/2016 23:02

My first thought was: cute! A baby called Albus.

It's a good adult name too and Albie is a great nickname too.

VagueIdeas · 08/01/2016 23:05

Now I loved Harry Potter, but it's a bit too fangirl to call your baby Albus in my opinion. Not only that, but I think it's a really unattractive name. It looks ugly written down. Fine for an amazing fictional wizard, but not great for a baby/child/teen/grown man.

xmasseason · 08/01/2016 23:07

Albus reminds me of the word bulbous.

Crazypetlady · 08/01/2016 23:41

Love Albus but I am a HUGE harry potter fan.
