I'm not sure if this is a suitable girl name... If not, I may go for Robin, NN Birdie :)

Awful even as a nickname.

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/01/2016 12:14

Yes I get that thanks.

BertrandRussell · 06/01/2016 12:24

It wasn't clear from your post........

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/01/2016 12:26

I think it was pretty clear as I used the word 'chose' and 'nickname'........

SoWhite · 06/01/2016 12:58

I think her point was that they choose to go with their unusual nicknames in a professional context.

Indeed it was. I don't think I'd bat an eyelid if I heard that the CEO of Uber, or the MP for Brighton and Hove was called Birdy. That was all I meant.

I don't actually like the name, as per my first post.

SoWhite · 06/01/2016 13:01

They did not have their unusual names imposed on them. Realistically, you don't actually know that. Just to be devil's advocate here.

Her name is Robyn, but we are going to call her Birdy.
Her name is Susan, but she is going to be known as Zanny.

We just don't know, do we?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 06/01/2016 13:15

It's not a suitable name for any gender. It's just silly.
Robyn is gorgeous though.

BertrandRussell · 06/01/2016 13:16

The point being that Zanny, should she have wished, had a less unusual name to go back to. My niece Miro chooses to use her given name, Miriam, in her professional capacity. She is still Miro at home. My own, conventionally named children have "unique" nicknames which family and friends use........

It's all about giving choices. And not using naming children as an ego trip.

Notso · 06/01/2016 13:36

Everyone has choices though. It's not especially hard to change your name.

A child I used to look after had the nickname Birdy. Her real name was Deryn, Welsh for bird.

SoWhite · 06/01/2016 13:38

It's all about giving choices.

Yeah, which is why the thread had moved on to being called Robyn with the nickname Birdy. Confused

IoraRua · 06/01/2016 16:36

Absolutely bloody not.
I don't like Robyn but it is miles better than Birdy.

Stirling84 · 06/01/2016 16:40

Birdie is a variant of Bridie is a shortening of Bridget - no?

JE1234 · 06/01/2016 16:43

Birdie is also a very old nickname for someone who was small.

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/01/2016 16:44

I've never heard of a Bridget with the nickname Birdie. Plenty of Bridies though.

Birdie sounds very Southern USA in a LuAnn kind of way.

JenniferAnistonsHair · 06/01/2016 23:15

Birdy reminds me of the florist in Eastenders. It's a pet name used by her husband though...

libertydoddle · 06/01/2016 23:22

I have an elderly relation called Birdy, short for Bridget. People always assume the name is a joke or call her Bridie which she doesn't like.

Trickydecision · 07/01/2016 08:10

My mum often used to call me Birdy. Once a lady heard her and said 'Ooh, I'm called Birdy and I've never met another'. Mum didn't tell her it was just a nickname.

KoalaDownUnder · 08/01/2016 15:31

It's silly. Like 'Teddy' from another thread that's going at the moment.

That said, I'd almost prefer it to Robyn. I strongly dislike Robyn, and then it gets shortened to Rob, which is so masculine.

Burgatroyd · 08/01/2016 23:04

I like it!

Birdy Smith sounds formidable

nooka · 09/01/2016 08:35

I think that Robin is very pretty (but don't like Robyn at all). I would assume that a Birdy was really a Bridget.

My dd is very keen on the singer Birdy, but the name to me brings to mind the Alan Parker film which was rather bleak and sad really (great soundtrack).

unicornthong · 13/01/2016 05:57

Robyn with a y.

Birdy/Birdie would be cool on a tall, slim girl but perhaps not so much on a short, chunky girl Blush...Big Bird springs to mind.

Astralabe · 13/01/2016 20:46

I like it - although I think of poor Birdie from Tottie's House, the first death on children's TV!

50000LiraForMyThoughts · 13/01/2016 20:52

Robyn is lovely. Birdy would be a good nn for a Jennifer (Jenny Wren). I feel like I'm on Ted Rogers' 321 all of a sudden!
