William
David
Edward

Much more common as surnames with -s or -es on the end.

floppyjogger · 03/01/2016 18:27

Its only on MN they are hated names!

I love Riley out of the two.

SuburbanRhonda · 03/01/2016 18:27

Or -son Smile

Not true at all usual. Lots of people ask about surname type names (modern ones like Riley and Bailey), classic names, nature names, unusual names, names from certain cultures and so on.

I think it's just a reflection of the general consensus for the British public. Look at the top 100. Wildly popular names are usually classics with veins of other trends running through the lists.

FWIW, I don't like a lot of classics either.

While MN has a demographic, I do think overall you get a good approximation of the reaction you can expect in rl. Except on here we voice it.

AuntieStella · 03/01/2016 18:28

I don't really like surnames as names.

Of these two, I prefer Bailey (as long as your surname isn't Bridge, of course)

Whycantweallgetalong · 03/01/2016 18:29

I prefer Bailey. It has more punch to it. 'Riley' kind of riles the jaw.

VO7777 · 03/01/2016 18:29

I don't mind if you say you hate them, I wanted opinions :) maybe they're better for the middle!

Love the disingenuous "but Edward and William" are surnames. Different etymology, different historical use, different cultural associations.

I'm in Norfolk too btw. LOTS of Rileys.

VO7777 · 03/01/2016 18:32

Oh, right Grin

I prefer Riley to Baily but have only known girls called Riley. They aren't my favourite names but I'm a big fan of naming your child whatever you want.

I find all the popular classic names a bit boring (even though my own DC have very popular names Blush )

I guessed you were new to MN, I think you have probably realised by now that the MN 'collective' view has a bit of a North London vibe Wink Grin

I'm not being deliberately provocative, honest Wink

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/01/2016 18:38

Not keen OP, but it's your choice. Chose the name you love.

ItsANewDayToday · 03/01/2016 18:40

You've got a great, strong surname so I think you can have a less traditional first name.

Joey is a really nice name it goes well with your surname,

bruffin · 03/01/2016 18:44

The only riley i know is a teenage girl
Not keen on either for boy or girl

PeaceLoveAndMincePies · 03/01/2016 20:06

They're both pet names in my head. But do what makes you happy.

RocketRainbow · 03/01/2016 21:35

I prefer Riley.
It sounds good with a classic middle name eg Riley James or Riley George.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 03/01/2016 21:44

I know a girl Riley and a boy bailey.

I think bailey is sweet, but comes from the old word for bailiff?

I also know a boy Morgan.

I would make sure you give him a proper 'boyish' middle name.

Bailey Thomas
Bailey George
Bailey Daniel

Wildernessrock · 03/01/2016 21:48

They are both "naughty boy" names I think. I would choose something else!

Wildernessrock · 03/01/2016 21:50

I do like Joey though!💙

Yes, what exactly are 'naughty boy' names?

edengarden123 · 03/01/2016 22:37

I like both but Riley is my favourite.... great names!

Lilmisskittykat · 03/01/2016 22:38

I thought we were naming a puppy from the title... So erm ...
