Names to go with a French surname

Snowball789 · 30/12/2015 20:17

We have the surname Bisson (pronounced Bee-son). What names for boy or girl would you suggest to go with this? We live in the Channel Islands so French names are quite popular but not sure if we should go English? Difficult beacuse I am a teacher and many names are 'off limits' as they bring to mind past students. Please help!

How about Natalie?

That's French, yet English and sounds great with Bisson.

For a girl

Aurelia/ Aurelie
Florence

For a boy

Pierre
Henri
Alexis

Righto - so, boys names that are unusual (ish) that would work with a French accent? How about:

Sylvester
Jesse
Jude
Rory/Ruaridh (Ru-ree)
Austin
Oscar (popular in the UK but maybe not so much in the channel islands?)

Gabriel
Isaac
Jerome
Michel

Cléo for a girl.

Gosh, you lot are on fire! Natalie Bisson does sound good and I also like Aurelie so I’m adding both of those to the girl’s list. I find myself liking Syvester although because of the Tweety-pie cartoon it might be better as Sylvain. I have always loved Oscar because of an old family friend of that name but sadly it seems just as popular over here. I do like Pierre, Gabriel, Jerome and Michel. I still really love Rémi though even though my husband has vetoed it completely. Keep them coming folks, this is really helpful.

There's something in the Caspian, Casper, Jasper thing that is very appealing. I like Piers and Serge but have taught quite a few so they've beeen ruined for me. Like both Felix and Fintan. This is good.

This might be useful - I popped some of the ones you said you liked into the search and it comes up with similar names :)

Cassius stood out for me so far.

oh and Niro/Nero.

I know an Emerson, Emmet for short.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 03/01/2016 20:42

Some lovely suggestions, especially the girls' names.

I do like Sylvain, also Henri, Luc and Michel.
I also like Christian, Christophe and Franck.

Sorry to say that as nice as Piers is, I always associate it with Piers Morgan, so that puts me off to the point of cringing.

sarah2011 · 03/01/2016 20:44

Joel for a boy and Laurie for a girl- they are both a bit French and a bit English I think x

sarah2011 · 03/01/2016 20:45

I like cleo for a girl too x

KatharinaRosalie · 04/01/2016 09:05

I have a half-French baby called Elise. We also considered Adeline and Celeste, and for a boy, Tristan.

Snowball789 · 04/01/2016 19:09

Thanks everyone, you've been brilliant and we now have two long lists of great names to chew over. Myother - thank you for the link, never seen that site before but it is really useful.

Genevieve
Juliet
Caspar
Paul

When I read Cleo earlier for a girl, I thought of the Renault car name, and Nicole? Pappa? which is quite a nice connection.

I just put my name into magic baby names and it suggested Pocahontas as an alternative Grin

Snowball789 · 04/01/2016 20:44

Ah, Enrique I used to have a Clio! Tell me, what did you put in to get Pocahontas? There is a stubborn Macbeth that it keeps flagging up for me as a 'unisex' name if I like Remy, Alexandre, Casper, Sylvie and Genevieve - not sure of the connection!
