Hello

Trying to work out if James is too popular to chose. It's high in the lists but I don't actually know any

Thanks

I have taught a couple of Jamies, and I know a grown up Jim

The only baby James I know was named for his grandfather.

Rivercam · 27/12/2015 13:50

I can think of four James, all age 13-14. Only one is called Jim.

sugar21 · 27/12/2015 13:52

I was married to a James and there are 2 where I work.

Trumpette · 27/12/2015 13:57

As clary has said regarding similar names like Thomas, Daniel and Joseph.

I know a ten year year old and one in most classes of DC primary school. Not over popular but a 'safe' name.

Obviously the nick name 'Jimmy'' has been somewhat tainted by Savile of the same name.

It was very popular when DS was born ( he is now seven) so we used it as his second name!

FarrowAndBallache · 27/12/2015 14:30

Yes, I know 6 James' under 11 and 7 aged 14 to 71.

Gorgeous name.

sidsgranny · 27/12/2015 14:34

I know a few (kids & adults in 30s) but it's a lovely, classic name and one I don't think will ever date. Go for it!

cecilelliott · 27/12/2015 14:40

I only know a few James actually. Seems to pale into insignificance beside the Oscars, Theos and Tobys in the South-East. A classic name - go for it.

Ps Met a little Jimmy the other day. So, if you suddenly find James itself shoots up in popularity, there are good unusual nickname options.

Good Luck!

MommyVan · 27/12/2015 14:44

I have a 6yo one and he is lovely. 3 others in his school year though! But we - and he - don't mind that. An easy to spell, easy to pronounce name was important to us.

especially me with my nightmare name. Thanks mum

Jenijena · 27/12/2015 14:53

I have a James, there's one other at his nursery and it's not unusual to bump to others out and about.

Although it's popular, it's always been popular (top 10 in every decade or something) so it's not 'trendy' popular, just timeless...

Elledouble · 27/12/2015 14:55

I know a three year old James but he's the only young James I know. Lots and lots of boys who have it as a middle name though (including mine!).

xmasseason · 27/12/2015 15:06

I only know of one under 10.

BoboChic · 27/12/2015 17:04

I have a first cousin (aged 54) and a first cousin once removed (aged 10) and a second cousin (aged 37) called James. And a first cousin of my father's, who died aged 80 a couple of years ago was called James. It is one of those names that is ubiquitous but timeless.

rollonthesummer · 27/12/2015 17:11

James' what? ;)

There are three in my son's class (he is 14) and there were several in my own year at school as well.

Haffdonga · 27/12/2015 17:12

I know a baby James, born this year. People were quite surprised by his name as there are not so many new James coming along.

But the thing is, if you ask how many people know a James only the people who know a James will answer so you will never get a true impression of how popular the name is. Perhaps you'd be better to ask how many people don't know a baby James. Confused

If you like it, go for it. Smile

Lizziedripping1 · 27/12/2015 18:02

James is a lovely classic name and works in any setting. Go for it

MamaLazarou · 27/12/2015 20:23

We lived in Kent for a while and every other boy was called James. At one playgroup session there were five Jameses in the room! But since we moved to London, we've hardly met any.

Sophronia · 27/12/2015 22:30

I don't know any young ones, but it's a lovely, classic name.

JakeyBurd · 28/12/2015 00:38

It's been top 5 in Scotland forever, and you can't spit round her without hitting one. I have one (against my wishes - forced by EX) and recall my ex-FIL, also James, telling me what great company he'd be in as at a recent family funeral there were 7 James 'Burds'. I never wanted my son to be yet another James 'Burd' but I was outnumbered and outflanked.

I know another mum with a James in the same boat but at least she won her fight for her son being known as his middle name.

OP, if you love the name and don't know any others then go for it - be nice to hear of a James whose mum is happy about it! Smile

CormoranStrike · 28/12/2015 12:42

I love the username JakeyBurd

lifeinslowmotion · 28/12/2015 12:46

I know a few with varying ages. One in his early 30s, one around 20 and a 3 year old. It's a good name.

VagueIdeas · 28/12/2015 12:59

It's still very popular. According to this handy gadget, somewhere in the region of 4000-5000 babies called James born every year for the last decade.

Do you know many James'?
Themodernuriahheep · 28/12/2015 13:09

Lots around 18, relatively few at the younger end.

As well as being a nice name it has the huge advantage imv of crossing social boundaries. No one can make assumptions about you based on your name. You can be a high court judge, a teacher, a factory employee, unemployed or whatever with James.

And it's easy to spell.

. It's quite rare in the combination of those attributes.

And it's still acceptable in those areas where you have alternatives such as Seamus and Jacques.

HackerFucker22 · 28/12/2015 19:05

We have a James and I've yet to meet another James. I know it's a popular name but in my experience they are few and far between. We only have one James in the whole preschool and 2 reception classes which is about 70 kids in total.

Paddingtonthebear · 28/12/2015 19:09

I know a fair few adult James/Jim/Jamie's and two babies under six months old called James. It's a safe, timeless name choice I think. Not very exciting though. I knew loads of James's when I was a kid. But different strokes for different folks!
