Emrys or Huw?

Title says it all really! Love both names, I probably prefer Emrys and DH prefers Huw but we are open to both. Emrys is presumably less well known to non Welsh speakers. My Dad is called Hugh though so wondering if that will cause issues.

Any thoughts much appreciated :)

Don't scare me with the talk of another baby next year Back! Grin

I want a Welsh name Secretly hence Huw rather than Hugh. I am concerned about having to people with the same sounding name in the family so definitely something I need to consider.

Seems to be pretty split now, I think we will have to see what he looks like when he comes out in about 7 weeks :)

Huw is more conventional.
I used to know an Emory so I like Emrys, too.

mamapants · 17/12/2015 18:07

fuckability English Hugh and welsh Huw are pronounced differently

nightandthelight · 17/12/2015 19:07

The pronounciation thing could be an issue! The only one of us with a Welsh accent is DH's Nanna.

Both great. Huw by a whisker.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/12/2015 10:40

How is Huw pronounced, then?

nightandthelight · 18/12/2015 10:55

Tbh koala the vast majority of people will pronounce it Hugh (including us due to our English accents) but those with Welsh accents would pronounce it differently. Might be easier to go with Emrys!

nightandthelight - thats what happens in our family. doesn't cause any issues. its quite a slight difference anyway - i didn't even notice for about 10 years. huw is fab. we know one....but there aren't many - its well known without being odd and suits any age/type of situation - ie isn't posh, common obscure

nightandthelight · 18/12/2015 11:57

That's what I like about it dreaming :) Good to know it doesn't cause any problems in your family.

Oh, I wasn't being a smart arse Grin, it's a genuine question - I have no idea how Huw is pronounced in Welsh! Do you sort of say the 'w'?

squoosh · 18/12/2015 13:04

I don't know either. I'm trying to remember how Huw Edwards says his name.

squoosh · 18/12/2015 13:04

Is it more like hoo that h'yoo?

squoosh · 18/12/2015 13:04

'than'

MamOfTwo · 18/12/2015 13:10

I am Welsh but thought Hugh and Huw were pronounced the same?? I also like Emrys and also Emlyn but do think they sound a bit feminine (probably because I know so many Emmas and Emilys). Are you in Wales or England, OP?

foxy6 · 18/12/2015 13:13

Emrys thats a lovely welsh name. x

GiddyOnZackHunt · 18/12/2015 13:13

I believe that the H is softer than the H in Hugh and the uw is more of an oo sound plus there's no sound at the end like Hugh has. It's really hard to explain but it's softer and more flowy.

nightandthelight · 18/12/2015 13:15

Wasn't suggesting you were being a smart arse koala! I'm not entirely sure how to write it out phonetically but squoosh probably has it :) Perhaps like hew? Just say Hugh with a Welsh accent Grin

Like I say though ours would be pronounced the same (except by the very small number of Welsh speakers we know).

In Wales mam with no plans to move :)

It is so hard to explain giddy!

KoalaDownUnder · 18/12/2015 13:17

Eek. Tricky!

I'd guess that anywhere outside Wales, he'll just end up with the same pron as 'Hugh', then: like 'you' with a 'h' sound tacked on the beginning.

nightandthelight · 18/12/2015 13:23

Yep and that's fine with me koala :) Tbh he could decide for himself how he would like it pronounced once old enough.

OP posts:
nightandthelight · 18/12/2015 13:31

Really hope he comes out definitely looking like one or the other, otherwise we will have to act on Back's suggestion Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 18/12/2015 13:48

It's s nice name, regardless. Love Hugh.

squoosh · 18/12/2015 14:34

^^

I read that as a note from a person called Hugh. Grin

lloydlf76 · 18/12/2015 14:53

I like Huw but if your Dad is Hugh and English I think pronunciation will be an issue as they are said differently. The worst thing is a Welsh name continually pronounced wrong. If that can't be overcome I would go for Emrys as at least then once you've explained to people they will get it

waitingforsomething · 18/12/2015 15:05

If it's pronounced similarly to Hugh then I love it ! (And I have one...)
