How popular is it becoming where you live and is it likely to "boom" in the next couple of years?

I like it but I'm worried it will, in my words, "do a Riley" and everyone start using it one year and I really would rather have something more unusual for my blue bump coz my DD's name is very unique

I only know one Riley as 1st name (boy) & no one with first name Hunter.
Is it okay with you if people assume you're into game shooting & fishing?

CumbriaMum91 · 16/12/2015 11:41

Mitzy That link has been super helpful thank you! Also turns out my DD's name is barely in the top 5000 lol, like 4650ish Grin

YeOldeTrout I'm really against hunting actually I like this name in the 'surname' sense. If someone named their child Jackson you wouldn't assume his dad was called Jack lol

I see your point I just think it's totally irrelevant to me but thanks :)

Enjolrass · 16/12/2015 11:47

No one has ever thought dad was into hunting or fishing. He uses his first and second name in All legal documents. He always uses his name in full. It's never been an issue.

OP Google gladiators. It was a programme from the 90s. One of them was called hunter.

YeOldeTrout · 16/12/2015 11:49

Some people will assume you like hunting or the image of a hunter.

CumbriaMum91 · 16/12/2015 12:22

YeOldeTrout Then I wonder what goes through those people's heads lol Grin If I met someone called Fisher I definitely wouldn't think their parents loved fishing

I'd just think they had dreadful taste. OP, I'll give it to you, Hunter is better than Fisher.

LemonBreeland · 16/12/2015 13:17

I like Hunter. I don't think it will go the way of Riley. Although I think it is more likely to be popular than some surname names. I like those type of names and we had a few on our list for DS2 including Hunter. We also had Cooper, Fletcher, Dexter. One of those is his actual name and I knwo would be slated on here, but it suits him and he loves having a name nobody else has.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/12/2015 13:23

If parents called their kid 'fisherman' I would assume they liked fishing, yes.
Dancer- they like dancing...
Hunter- they like hunting...
I can't imagine it's a popular name among vegetarians.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/12/2015 14:47

What about something like Colton then? I like Hudson.

Oysterbabe · 16/12/2015 15:02

It's a girls name isn't it?

BeaBoo · 16/12/2015 15:05

Hunter just makes me think of Hunter S Thompson. Nothing else.

It was at the top of DP's list if DD was a boy. I don't know of any other hunters.

brookeberry · 16/12/2015 15:18

I really like Hunter Smile and only know one where I live.

SoWhite · 16/12/2015 15:19

It's a girls name isn't it?

No, its a boys name. Some people believe that boys names on girls are cute. Whilst at the same time believing that it is 'cruel' to give a boy a girls name.

YeOldeTrout · 16/12/2015 15:28

Can be a girl name. (shrug)

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/12/2015 15:29

Some people believe that boys names on girls are cute. Whilst at the same time believing that it is 'cruel' to give a boy a girls name. Same with toys, clothes and almost anything else. Sexism, innit?

SparklyTinselTits · 16/12/2015 15:58

My DD's middle name is James....she has a very feminine "pretty" first name, so we decided for a more masculine middle name. A few kids who come to our baby group have names that are more common for the opposite of their gender - some people give us a Hmm look but sod them - we like it. If you like hunter, go for it! I think it's a lovely name for a boy

derxa · 16/12/2015 16:05

Hunter is the name of Meadow Soprano's best (girl) friend in the Sopranos.
I had a (male) physics teacher called Hunter.

Rose1Thornton · 16/12/2015 16:41

I live in West London and I only know 1 Hunter, but he's only a year old, so it might mean that the name is starting to rise in popularity so in like four years it might be the new Riley, but I would still go for it, it's a lovely name and because of all that's associated with it 'actual hunter's, wellies etc' there's a good chance that it might never take off in the UK.

Strokethefurrywall · 16/12/2015 16:51

YeOldeTrout you seriously would assume that parents that call their son Hunter like hunting? What a load of bollocks.
I know 2 Hunters here (Small island south of Miami) and surnames are very popular - the parents of both Hunters that I know are professionals, none of whom are into hunting... What a random thought process.

My DS1 is Carter. I doubt anyone would assume he pulls carts? I also have a Sullivan -

In DS1's age group there is also a Hudson, Fletcher, Spencer, Fraser and Huxley.

Hunter is a pretty normal name here OP, I like it!

mouldycheesefan · 16/12/2015 16:52

Being snobby, but Jayden, Riley, hunter all scream 'housing estate' . They are not classless names.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/12/2015 16:55

That comment doesn't display much class..........

derxa · 16/12/2015 16:57

Hunter is quite posh actually..

NeedsAMousekatool · 16/12/2015 17:02

Best programme ever. I miss the early 90s

Hunter
RiverTam · 16/12/2015 17:14

I can't believe are wittering on about a game show from the 90s! What relevance does that have to a child born in 2016?

I think it is becoming more popular, OP.
