What does your child think is the most unusual name of their friends?

I asked my 15yo DS which of his similar aged friends has the most unusual name and his answer was Kimberly Grin.

I think he has some friends with very unusual names but when I suggested that maybe some of those were uncommon he replied well maybe but he had never heard of a Kimberly before. He then thought some more and suggested that Anna-Mai was a tad strange.

Maybe he is just pulling my leg Hmm

Does your DS think Ocean and Tiger are unusual though. It turns out mine thinks they are perfectly normal names Confused

Ds1 says Elisade and Barry.....:)

Ds2 says Pebbles and Beaumont.

StarkyTheDirewolf · 15/12/2015 01:46

Dh knew a Shauniqua. We have an Ocean in the family.

I've come across a Tiger, Judd, Blessing, Neo, Princess-Precious-Jewel in not kidding, that wasn't even her full name Bubbles, Romy-Michelle from the film

I could go on.

StarkyTheDirewolf · 15/12/2015 01:46

Oh, and I forgot Honey Peach.

Stollenlover · 15/12/2015 13:48

Most kids don't think twice about their friends' names, they're just that, names that they associate with their mates. They just accept most names.

As others have said, the world is becoming increasingly global that name diversity will only grow - I think that's great.

Tirfarthoin · 15/12/2015 14:15

Stollen, I agree and that was really my point. You can call your kids what you like their friends won't think twice about it.

8 year old: Zebedee
7 year old: Larissa
5 year old: Yvaine or Fabian
3 year old: Zayon

Ashit
I know it's a cultural thing and most probably a lovely name in this boy's home country but not in English. School has asked the parents if they could please call him something else. Parents have said no Confused

CatThiefKeith · 15/12/2015 14:55

There is a Bow Belle in my nieces class. Confused I assume her parents don't know the connotations.

Dd's class - Huckleberry.

Indantherene · 15/12/2015 15:06

Back in 1997 when I was a TA, a girl transferred into Y9 from another area. Her name was Doris.

All the staff were Doris WTF?! The kids accepted it with no problem.

Tirfarthoin · 15/12/2015 15:19

Doris's parents were ahead of the trend I suspect it's making a comeback like Edith and Maybel

Dd 12 says Julide, pronounced Julie Dare.

ArmfulOfRoses · 15/12/2015 17:11

I think it's Sandra. Not that it's a weird name, just very uncommon in 12yo's.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 15/12/2015 17:16

Shamralea or Arenzo.

ThornyBird · 15/12/2015 18:16

Armful dc2's best friends in primary were Arnold and Bernie, also not unusual but not what you expect in youngsters Grin

YeOldeTrout · 15/12/2015 18:32

the boys wouldn't take an interest & DD is in a sulk, but I nominate (1 for each DC): Angel, Zilla, Kneeoh & Anakin (all boys).

MrsHathaway · 15/12/2015 18:53

The 7 yo reckons the most unusual is Lukas, because of the k (Polish family). I think the most unusual is Fergus or Woody (not a nickname).

The 4 yo was friendly with an Antigone before starting school, but since she was known as Tig/Tiggy like Woolly and Tig he wouldn't have found that remarkable.

The 2 yo is called Spike and he is the most unusual most people meet. The pursed lips relax a bit when they realise it's a nickname.

We mostly know children with very normal names, tbh.

Blueberry234 · 15/12/2015 18:54

Orlando

BabyGanoush · 15/12/2015 18:57

Devaugn and Zubarin

RiverTam · 15/12/2015 19:07

I agree that the children have no issue with the name but presumably (as some people must have done for the sake of this thread at least) if you ask your DC you are drawing attention to it and thus sowing the seed that some names are weird. Which I'm a bit Hmm about. I certainly wasn't about to ask DD this question.

Tbh a name like Olivia, which we have never come across despite it being so popular, would be no more unusual to her than Tyger or Peaches or any of the Nigerian/Turkish/Polish names that are plentiful in her school.

That makes me sound a bit po-faced, I know. I just think that responsibility for potential name-mocking belongs firmly with the mockers, not the parents of the child being mocked for choosing, for example, Ashit as their child's name.

iklboo · 15/12/2015 19:07

Most unusual DS can think of that he knows is Fenton. Which is hardly bizarre.

Poppiesway · 15/12/2015 19:08

Diamond.. Ds2 thinks it's hilarious. Diamond has a sister called precious. Otherwise they're all pretty non adventurous names

Freezingwinter · 15/12/2015 19:09

Princess Hmm

iklboo · 15/12/2015 19:14

He's just remembered Goldie-Mae from his old school.

hazelnutlatte · 15/12/2015 19:17

Dd's school has Crystal, Chanel, Armani, Taaha and Lamin. Dd has never commented on any of these names but thinks that the name 'Summer' is crazy!
