My favourite names are Beatrix and Alexander, I think, but there are still a few more names in the mix. My surname begins with an 'H'. I obviously don't know the gender of my baby! Middle names are very likely to be Eleanor or Robert. Just FYI - my DH doesn't like Blythe or Benjamin - I'd have Ben in a flash if he'd let me!!

Beatrix
Chloe
Charlotte
Blythe

Alexander
Sebastian
William
Benjamin

Thanks so much X

I see what you mean myotherusername - I used to love the name Chelsea-Lee when I was about 16. It is the exact opposite of what I'd pick now. I have the same reaction to hyphenated names with 'Mae' or nicknames like Lexi now, but would have been right up my street 15 or so years ago!! Smile

Point taken otherusername, I know a few (not many under 5, though) and your right it was very popular in the 90s.

Sorry I was a bit snippy Blush

ashesandfire · 10/12/2015 22:32

I love Charlotte and Blythe, Alexander and Benjamin.

myotherusernameisbetter · 10/12/2015 22:39

It's okay deepblue - I think we all associate names with people we know and our own experience. I'm quite often sitting here thinking "why do all these apparently "middle class" sounding people love X (name)" when all I can hear in my head is it being belted out a window from a flat in a not very nice estate. I'm not judging the people living there, just not being able to equate the discrepancy in my head.

My siblings and I have quite ordinary names, never particularly fashionable or posh either but I can remember as a child hating my perfectly normal (Royal) name and wanting to change it something much more exciting such as Michelle or Farrah or something (70s). My parents clearly knew better! :)

MrsCaecilius · 11/12/2015 09:47

Beatrix - lovely and elegant. Classic without being dull.
Chloe - dull. Smokes and wears pyjamas to Asda.
Charlotte - classic and pretty, quite girly, don't really like Lottie as nn
Blythe - 70s try hard

Alexander - fabulous! Strong and solid, lots of good nn opportunities
Sebastian - a bit wet, see Brideshead Revisited
William - classic and handsome, you can always depend on William (unless he is Just William, of course!)
Benjamin - another good strong name

Chewbecca · 11/12/2015 09:51

I'm with you - Beatrix and Alexander are my favourites from your list, both lovely.

Montsti · 11/12/2015 17:47

My favourites are Charlotte & Benjamin but also love Beatrice (prefer to Beatrix) & William. Alexander & Sebastian also great but not as keen on Seb...

I don't like Chloe or Blythe...

Jw35 · 11/12/2015 18:09

I love Alexander that's what I've chosen if I have a boy (don't know yet either). I like Beatrix and Charlotte, not keen on the others. Alexander and Beatrix are lovely strong names

NadiaWadia · 11/12/2015 18:12

I really disagree with posters who are calling Chloe downmarket. It is a beautiful name. Classic, of Greek origin, and used in literature in English prior to 1800.

Just because it may have been also popular with people of a lower social-economic status in recent years - shock horror! doesn't detract from the name itself, IMO. It is hardly in the same league as Jayden, Tyler, Chardonnay, etc. Which, come to think of it, apart from the snob thing (which I am guilty of myself in relation to them) probably seem less appealing because they have been made up in recent years, they are new names. Whereas that obviously doesn't apply to Chloe.

myotherusernameisbetter · 11/12/2015 18:39

I disagree Nadia it is what it is. History is irrelevant.

NadiaWadia · 11/12/2015 19:06

So just because it has been used by people you don't identify with, that name is dammed forever? And can't you see the clear difference between Chloe and , for example, Tyler? Isn't that even more daft than the posters who comment saying that they once knew someone named Olivia say, who was horrible, so now you could never use that name?

Interesting that you mention 'Royal' names, as names like James, Mary, Elizabeth etc. have historically been used by all sections of society.

But I guess we are not going to agree on this! It just seems a waste of a good name to me.

Burgatroyd · 11/12/2015 19:17

I like Chloe and love Blythe but agree either poster who said it depends on who wears the name.

Omega say I have a chavvy 70s name. Think Sharon or Tracey. I love my name and like that it is seen as bit 'chavvy'. I don't think I am and my name hasn't held me back.

myotherusernameisbetter · 11/12/2015 19:21

I didn't say it was damned - it just is what it is. A name having a fine or royal history doesn't make it a nice name, personally I don't like the sound of it and the associations it has for me. I don't think people that say that a name reminds them of someone they didn't like and therefore they couldn't use it are daft - that's daft.

Why would you pick a name that reminds you of someone unpleasant or nasty or whatever? Hmm

Anyway, if you like it crack on. We'll agree to disagree.

ElinorRochdale · 11/12/2015 19:23

I love Alexander. Alexander Robert is a lovely strong, classic name. I like Eleanor better than any of your suggested first names for a girl.

PitilessYank · 11/12/2015 20:03

As I said before, I love the names Alexander and Beatrix, but I agree that Eleanor is also a lovely name, as is Elizabeth.

Queazy · 12/12/2015 09:14

I love Eleanor too, but it's a family name so would be the middle name of choice for a dd Smile I still like Chloe a lot. I think names are such personal choices, but find getting people's views on it on mn really helpful because people often think of drawbacks I wouldn't consider. It's helped that some think Beatrix is a bit harsh - it is in a way, and might consider Beatrice instead. I'd love Blythe but DH won't be persuaded!

Alexander sounds like a meerkat
There will be tons of charlottes due to the princess.
Chloe is dated.
Love Beatrice - rather than your spelling.
Sebastian is lovely

pieceofpurplesky · 12/12/2015 09:42

Beatrice is softer and would be my first choice then Charlotte.

Alexander (or just xander) then Benjamin

myotherusernameisbetter · 12/12/2015 10:22

I've been watching that c4 programme about the secret lives of 4,5 & 6 year olds. There is a lovely little girl on that called Beatrice :)

Lottiedaydreambeliever2014 · 12/12/2015 11:32

I know 3 little Chloe's so the popularity in my circle of friends puts me off.
I like Beatrix (prefer Beatrice) and Alexander, go for these if they are your favourites! Love Seb and William as well, I think of these as classics. I wouldn't call a baby Charlotte when the Royal princess has recently been called that. Never heard of Blythe as a name.

Thetruthfairy · 13/12/2015 21:23

Wow...I would comment if I thought a name was ridiculous or Ill-fitting but to refer to a name as a 'single teenage mum name.' Just plain silly and wrong.
Chloe is nice, and I know serveral nice Chloe's (with parents who are still together). Go for it if you like it.
I love Ben and Blythe

myotherusernameisbetter · 13/12/2015 21:51

...tempted to comment about it being okay to say a name is ridiculous....in the end just can't be bothered....

timelytess · 13/12/2015 21:52

Ditch Blythe, the rest are fine.

Your list is quite short.

Queazy · 14/12/2015 09:28

The list is short because I've whittled it down from much more! Thanks for all your views Smile
