Is this girls name too out there?

I was wondering, would using Esmeralda for a girl be too out there?
According to the stats there were only 14 born last year. It sounds like a really pretty but also elegant and strong name that could potentially work from childhood to adulthood.
I was also thinking you could use the nickname Esme for a more well known alternative if wanted?
Would love to hear you opinions.
Thanks in advance x

I like a longer name with a nickname, so prefer Esmeralda to Esme as the given name. Lovely name.

Ha, Drumknott I was going to say there may be more Esmereldas born this year, after the last Terry Pratchett book was published Grin

Oh Rue I would love that! I haven't managed to read the last book yet; read the dedication, burst in to tears and haven't managed to get past it yet Sad If I was to have a girl it would be top of my list, possibly Esmerelda Jane after one of my favourite literary heroines and one of my favourite authors. Quite the legacy to live up to for a little girl but aim high Grin

Have you decided yet OP?

I bought the hardcover and never opened it, I read it on my kindle in the end. And sobbed, a lot. Worth it though!

OP, Esmerelda is a lovely name.

I bought the special edition with the blue cover and silver bee and DP bought me the hardcover version with the Paul Kidby art - have thoroughly failed to read either Blush I'm not sure I can, because I want there to be One More Book Sad

Anyway, Esmerelda continues to be a favourite of mine. Green is one of my favourite colours so I also love the meaning of the name

I think it is 'too much name' for a regular, non-famous, English person.

If you don't like the shortened version, don't go for the longer one. In any case in 10-15 years' time, your daughter's school friends will decide what to call her and you won't get a say in it!
Mum of daughters of 25, 23 and 21 with unusual names, who knows!!

Umm I can't get past the hunchback of ND.

Esme is lovely though.
