It isn't very common these days. What do you think?

No.
I know two Colettes. Nice (ish) women, nasty name.

fuzzywuzzy · 05/12/2015 22:47

I love the name, mainly as I work with a Colette and she is one of the nices people I have ever met.

Finallyonboard · 05/12/2015 22:47

I don't like it.

squoosh · 05/12/2015 22:49

It makes me think 'roll it there Colette'.

Very common among Irish women in their fifties. It's a Maureen kind of name.

SanityClause · 05/12/2015 22:50

Lovely.

SwedishEdith · 05/12/2015 22:50

Dated. Not in a good way. So will be fashionable in a few years' time.

thinkfast · 05/12/2015 22:54

Makes me think of the Billy Fury song

Scarletforya · 05/12/2015 22:57

Yea, it's quite fuddy-duddy. A lot of older Irish women are called Colette, people of pension age.

It'd be like Martina, Pauline, Bernadette, Patricia etc

DickDewy · 05/12/2015 22:57

I don't like it.

peashooter · 05/12/2015 22:57

DH is French and it's a family name. Guess it's not really good to go in the UK based on responses so far.......I kind of like it, but worry that it's too unusual. I didn't know it was an old ladies name in Ireland though.
I only really know it as the (French) author - haven't met anyone called it outside of DH family.

Oh, there's so many lovely French names for girls. Pick something else.

CastaDiva · 05/12/2015 23:06

Exactly what Squoosh said.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 05/12/2015 23:08

Well it most certainly wouldnt be one of my names, but in answer to your question. There's no such thing as a nice or horrible name, is there. It's all about opinions.

peashooter · 05/12/2015 23:08

My favourite is probably Emilie but DH hates that.

squoosh · 05/12/2015 23:16

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost is right, it's all subjective. I don't like Colette because it's a deeply unfashionable name in Ireland. But if I'd never heard it before I might like it.

I like Sylvie but apparently that's hicksville central in France.

I don't like it. Roll it there Colette, indeed, Gay Byrne would think it was a lovely name for a lovely woman.

I dislike Nicolette too.

strawberryandaflake · 05/12/2015 23:26

Like it. Not dated. Very French.

celtictoast · 05/12/2015 23:29

I like it.

ZenNudist · 05/12/2015 23:30

I like it. French associations for me. Not dated, classy. Never met one ever.

chicaguapa · 05/12/2015 23:37

Coline is fairly similar and is soft-sounding and French.

peashooter · 05/12/2015 23:43

chicaguapa Interesting. I would have heard that name as Colleen and would have thought it was Irish.....
Seems to be quite a lot of overlap between French/Irish names!

TheOldestCat · 05/12/2015 23:51

I like it. - there is a Colette at the DC's school (primary) and it's unusual and lovely.

But then my Dd has an Irish/French overlap name so I would say that!

If you like it, go for it - better a name you love than a name you are not so keen on and a squillion other children have as well.

harrietm87 · 06/12/2015 11:42

It is a French name but very common in Ireland, especially among older ladies, because it's the name of a saint (Bernadette is similar).
I think it's lovely though. Old lady names are coming back!
